Fever
Fever is an elevated body temperature above the normal 98.6°F. Since body temperatures may fluctuate, concern for
fever begin when temperatures reach 100.4 and higher. Fever is NOT a disease and is the body’s natural response to
fight infections from bacteria and viruses that cannot survive the higher temperatures. Most fevers do not need medical
intervention and can be treated at home. If your child has a fever and does not appear sick, letting the fever run its
course will better help your child fight the infection on his/her own.
Treatment:

Use a thermometer to check your child’s temperature (rectal temperatures are the most accurate).
Either Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Pediacare) every 4 hours or Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) ever 6 hours may be
given to lower a fever. Make sure dosing is correct. If you are unsure, call your provider or pharmacy.
Dress your child to keep them comfortable, sometimes they will feel hot and sometimes cold with chills.
Give your child a sponge bath in warm water if this is comforting.
Keep your child well hydrated by offering clear liquids frequently.
Monitor your child’s behavior and response to medication and treatment
