FINANCIAL DETAILS
A Gordon King Doctor of Philosophy Scholarship provides a supplementary stipend for
PhD students who have been awarded either an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)
or a University Postgraduate Award (UPA) Scholarship. The supplement increases the
total stipend to a value equivalent to that of a Hackett Scholarship (currently $35,000 per
annum for three years, with a possible extension of up to six months). The value of
APA/UPA Scholarships in 2015 is $28,892 per annum, meaning the WIRF contribution is
$6108 per annum. Recipients will also be provided with a one-off $3,000 allowance for
economy travel from WIRF which must be used during the scholarship period.
Normally, up to three Gordon King Doctor of Philosophy Scholarships will be awarded in
any one calendar year.
The stipend will be non-taxable for a full-time scholarship and will go directly to the
institution at which the student enrols, to be paid to the student through that institution's
payroll.
In accepting to administer the scholarship, the institution will undertake to provide the
facilities and services, together with the normal overhead expenses, necessary for the
student to undertake the program, and it will assume responsibility for allocation of the
additional allowances.
*The $3,000 allowance for economy travel is payable by WIRF to the supplier upon
receipt of a tax invoice. The $3,000 is exclusive of GST.

GOODS AND SERVICES TAX
Consideration under this agreement excludes any provision for liabilities of the
organisation incurred as a result of the introduction by the Commonwealth Government
of the goods and services tax (GST). On the basis that the organisation becomes a

submission of an appropriate Tax Invoice, WIRF agrees to pay to the organisation the GST
liability.

recipient is entitled at law. If it is anticipated that the work will lead to results of
commercial significance, the student is advised to consult his/her supervisor, and WIRF's
legal advisers. The property rights which exist, or might exist, on any project must be
identified and steps taken to ensure that whatever protection is required is put into place
before the research results are made public to any other parties.
PUBLICATIONS / MASS MEDIA COVERAGE
Appropriate acknowledgment to WIRF shall be made by the student, or past-recipient of
a WIRF scholarship, when any conference presentations or material which represents the
results of work undertaken during tenure of the scholarship is submitted for publication, or

All publications of results of an approved scholarship shall acknowledge that the work
reported on has been supported by WIRF.
A copy of any journal publication and any report or book on work supported by a
Scholarship shall be submitted to WIRF following publication.

The Scholarship candidate shall be advised in writing of the approved budget for the
project in respect to which the award is made.
Payment of the Scholarship money is subject to the written acceptance of the award.

suitable progress of the student.
A final report and a copy of the thesis are required at the completion of the Scholarship.
Each year a financial statement of the allowances expenditure and salary is to be
