which has played host to large numbers of sea horses, the phenomena of ‘’ red tides’’ has killed off huge

3. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow .
Once upon a time, a Russian nobleman and his wife were going to a distant city in a carriage drawn by four
horses. Their way led them through a wood. When they had travelled for a few miles, they were attacked by a
pack of wolves. Their servant on seeing the wolves come nearer, begged his master to let him abandon one of
the horses. The nobleman consented and one of the horses was sacrificed to the wolves.
The wolves seized the horse and soon tore it apart into pieces and devoured it. But this did not stop their
pursuit of the carriage. They had gone a short distance when the wolves were upon them again. Having tasted
blood, they had in fact become more vicious. Again another horse was sacrificed and again they made their way
in safety for a short distance.
But no sooner had the wolves devoured the second horse, then they came rushing from all sides, more
vicious and fiercer than ever. The servant realized that their situation now was very desperate and desperate
situations demand desperate solutions. He said, “ Please Master, there is no other way to safety than for me to
give myself up to these ferocious beasts. While they are following me, you will get enough time to escape. All I
ask is that you act as a caretaker to my family when I am gone.”
The nobleman refused to let his faithful servant sacrifice himself, but the servant was firm in his decision.
Before his master could stop him, he jumped off the moving carriage and began to run towards the trees. The
wolves seeing a fleeing man gave up their pursuit and fell upon their new prey. Some wolves followed the
carriage for a short distance, but by now they were nearing the outskirts of the city. They gave up the chase, and
stood howling at the edge of the woods, while the carriage made its way safely to the city.
a) What was the suggestion given by the servant on seeing the wolves ?
Where were the Russian nobleman and his wife destined to go ?
What was the desperate situation that the couple and their servant faced ?

4. Read the following passage carefully.
1 Rights and duties are two sides of the same coin. One can’t exist without the other. Duties without rights are
mere slavery. Similarly, rights without duties amount to lawlessness. In any civilized society, rights and duties
must go side by side.
2 But in today’s world, everybody talks much about his rights. There is a great hue and cry if our rights are
infringed. But nobody seems to bother much about his duties. That is why there is great unrest in our present-day
life. Actually duties come first, and rights afterwards. Many a time, one man’s right is another man’s duty and
vice versa. For example, every man has the right to have an undisturbed sleep. So it becomes the duty of his
neighbor not to tune his radio at too high a pitch. If we want to enjoy our rights, we should act in such a way that
the rights of others are not trespassed. It can happen only if we take due account of our duties. In short, rights
and duties are complementary things and not contradictory.
Choose the correct option to answer each question.
