Application for PhD Research-Related Funding
Please complete this application if you are a PhD student in the School of Language, Social and Political
Sciences (LSAPS) seeking financial support for a research-related activity, e.g. conference funding, fieldwork, etc.
The fund is contestable and subject to the availability of funds. Each application will be evaluated by the LSAPS
Research Committee on its merit taking into account the probability that the activity will: (a) result in a quality
output, and (b) will have a positive impact on your research and job prospects. The funds cannot be used for
transcription, thesis editing, to purchase computer equipment or for meals/food (this does not include the conference
dinner which is usually part of the registration fee). The committee will not normally fund applications for
publishing in a journal. However, special applications can be made to the chair of the committee and will be
assessed on the ranking/reputation of the journal and support of the supervisors (Note: applicants will need to
provide information about the standing of the journal in the field). Awardees are required to give an informal
presentation of their research at a LSAP Postgrad Research Brownbag after receiving the funds.
For conference funding, you should submit a request soon after having submitted an abstract although acceptance
of your paper is a pre-requisite for the final approval of funds. Proposals must be submitted in advance of
expenditure and received as early as possible to take advantage of cheaper flights, early bird registrations, etc. If you
are awarded funds, note that airfare, accommodation and other expenses must be prepaid by an LSAP administrative
staff member.
Postgraduate students may apply for up to a maximum of $1,500 per year. Please submit an electronic copy of the
application with supporting materials to tiina.vares@canterbury.ac.nz
