Press Release ContiTech Power Transmission Group Strongest PU Timing Belt Comes from ContiTech Giant belt works in heavy-duty shredder Drives can be designed more efficiently with carbon belts Higher power transmission, longer service life, and less stretch than with aramid Shanghai, October 2014. It is a flagship product. With a length of close to five meters and a width of 22 centimeters, ContiTech's polyurethane timing belt with carbon tensile member is unmatched on the market. The combination of polyurethane and carbon yields a product up to dealing with demanding drive applications. The belt is ultra wear- and abrasion-resistant and very reliably transmits high power loads, especially in the presence of major force effects. The ContiTech Power Transmission Group has specially created the XXL design for use in the shredding plants run by Austrian specialist UNTHA shredding technology GmbH. The belt works in a secondary shredder used to process waste into fuel. The shredder is part of the complete treatment systems. Secondary fuels are increasingly employed in energy-intensive processes like manufacturing cement. Doing so has a double advantage: For one thing, it reduces large amounts of waste; for another, it replaces fossil and environmentally harmful fuels like oil, coal, and gas. UNTHA has solved the problem of how to innovatively power its machines: the gearless singlestep timing belt drive is simple and therefore very failsafe. It is also energy efficient and contributes to curbing operating costs at the plants. 315-kilowatts of power have to be applied to the drive shaft of the immense shredding machine. Its throughput can be as high as 15 metric tons of waste per hour. V-belts would not be able to transmit that much power; timing belts have a higher power to size ratio. Although the secondary shredder processes material that is already pre-shredded, the belt still has to withstand heavy loads. It transmits the driving force from the drive motor to the drum with a rotational speed of 10 m/s and does so at very high force peaks. The CONTI® SYNCHROCHAIN CARBON is the ideal solution for this demanding application. The ContiTech Power Transmission Group jointly carried out this project with their partner in Austria, Synchrotech Antriebstechnik GmbH. At the heart of the belt is the carbon tensile member. Under the same load, it exhibits considerably less elongation than a tensile member made of aramid. This 1/3 Your contact: Mario Töpfer, +49 511 938-1304 -2gives it better pitch precision under high tensile load. In combination with hard polyurethane teething, this very much reduces the risk of tooth skipping. The product has still another advantage: Thanks to the greater stiffness of the cords, pretensioning losses are minimized. This has the effect of further upping the efficiency of the drive. The CONTI® SYNCHROCHAIN CARBON is thus more or less maintenance-free, which means that it helps cut costs for service and maintenance and replacement. Thanks to its efficiency and quieter operation, and the fact that there is no need to lubricate or retighten it, the belt is much more advantageous than a chain drive, which it can replace. The new CONTI® SYNCHROCHAIN CARBON reveals its strengths in plant and machinery manufacture. The ContiTech Power Transmission Group offers a complete range of carbon belts. In addition to the polyurethane variant, the product range also includes a heavy-duty rubber timing belt, the CONTI® SYNCHROFORCE CARBON. With its materials expertise, ContiTech provides customized solutions to customers like UNTHA all around the world.
