DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT SERVICES For Reference Only CLASS CODE: 1370 PAY GRADE: 018 CLASS TITLE: EDUCATION SPECIALIST - GFC ALLOCATION FACTOR(S) This is work conducting informational and educational programs relating to hunting, hunting safety and wildlife conservation. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: (Note: The examples of work as listed in this class specification are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. Prepares and distributes news releases and photographs to news media, conservation and civic groups, and other interested parties; writes articles for various publications. Prepares and delivers lectures to schools, colleges, civic groups, sportsmen, gun clubs, and youth organizations. Designs, erects, and maintains conservation and hunting safety exhibits. Assists city, county, and state agencies with matters relating to firearm qualifications and safety. Recruits and trains volunteer hunter education instructors. Certifies students taught in the hunter education program. Investigates hunting and firearm accidents and assists in the prosecution of criminal negligence cases when needed. Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (Note: The knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) identified in this class specification represent those needed to perform the duties of this class. Additional knowledge, skills and abilities may be applicable for individual positions in the employing agency.) Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communication. Knowledge of the principles of hunting, hunting safety and wildlife conservation. Knowledge of the types and safety requirements of firearms used in hunting. 1370-EDUCATION SPECIALIST-GFC-CS Skill in the safe use of firearms used in hunting. Ability to design, erect and maintain conservation and hunting safety exhibits. Ability to prepare written information such as news releases and articles relating to conservation and hunting safety. Ability to speak before groups of people. Ability to conduct investigations of hunting and firearm accidents. Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques. Ability to work independently. Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to hunting, hunting safety and wildlife conservation. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a biological or environmental science, and one year of professional experience in a biological or environmental science field; or A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience as a state certified hunter safety/education instructor, accredited marksmanship instructor, or one year of experience in wildlife law enforcement, fish or game management; or A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and 100 classroom hours as a volunteer hunter safety/education instructor. A high school diploma or its equivalent and five years of experience as described above; or A high school diploma or its equivalent and 200 classroom hours as a volunteer hunter safety/education instructor. College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours per 20 classroom hours up to a maximum of 60 hours. EFFECTIVE: 2/18/1987 HISTORY:
