Texas Medical Center Council of Nurse Executives Meeting February 21, 2012 As evident from the information the team obtained from the U.S. Department of Health Services, there is an increase in the trend in the nursing profession both locally and nationally. This growth trend is both for registered as well as nurse practitioners, and it is showing that nurses are looking for higher level courses in terms of education. Forces of change driving the need for nurse leaders include a shift in demographics with the aging population, adapting to keep pace with changes in healthcare, using existing and new technology creatively to improve the practice of nursing, organizational decision making on issues impacting clinical care, and improve/influence the quality of patient care through compassion and good nursing leadership. The vision for the Nursing Leadership Institute: “To create and nurture an inter-institutional learning community of nurse leaders and educators that builds on our long history of excellence and commitment to the highest standards in education, research and practice in the Texas Medical Center and to expand this legacy of innovation and collaboration for global impact.” The mission statement: “The Texas Medical Center Chief Executive Council is a strategic alliance of nurse leaders in both service and education who collaboratively work to advance nursing practice and the delivery of health care. “ The team analyzed current competitors in the industry, Texas Medical Center Council of Nurse Executives Meeting February 21, 2012 but concluded that there is no inter-institutional collaborative effort to bring resources, knowledge, and funding together under one roof as the Nursing Leadership Institute is proposing. The objectives of the Nursing Leadership Institute are to develop an intensive leadership program through strategic alliance and strategic networking. An interinstitutional collaboration in education, practice and research. The core competency of the Nursing Leadership Institute is a multi-tier leadership program facilitated through inter-institutional collaboration. Leaders are created at all levels beginning with tier one and continuing through tier 5 with each step increasing in management, cognitive and analytical skills. Tier One – leading self, practice empowerment, and are personally and professionally accountable. Tier Two – leading others, relationship management, inter-institutional collaboration, and diversity management/conflict resolution. Tier Three – leading managers, organize resources, enhance performance of the workplace, and improve the efficiency of the workplace. Tier Four – functional leader’s cognitive and analytical skills, emotional intelligence to handle cross disciplinary interactions between nurses, doctors, and administration. Texas Medical Center Council of Nurse Executives Meeting February 21, 2012 Tier Five – organizational leaders with clinical expertise and business knowledge to make decisions related to both areas. It is evident that nurses would be the primary target market for the leadership institute, but when you go from local to a regional or national level the target market increases tremendously. Based on the information that was gathered from the American Hospital Association and the U.S. Department of Health Services, there are approximately 25,000 hospitals, 3 million nurses, and 1900 nursing schools in the United States alone. Pricing for the leadership institute should be based on a differentiation strategy emphasizing value creation or value added by attending a premier Nursing Leadership Institution. Finally, there are some critical steps in order to implement the business plan: Have a project champion who can drive this vision forward. Clearly define the vision and objectives. Stakeholder engagement given this is an interinstitutional collaborative effort. Long term strategic planning. Set specific measurable, realistic and timely expectations so that your results are tangible. Hire and retain competent staff. Council members discussed the need to select someone to lead the Nursing Institute business plan to assure that it is successful. Council members need to brainstorm on how TMC institutions can support the plan.
