Job Description
Purpose
To contribute to teaching, learning and assessment in the field of EAP on Pre-sessional English
courses.
To contribute to academic administration.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
 To teach up to 20 hours per week on the Pre-sessional (PSE) course and to ensure all associated
teaching duties (i.e. preparation of materials, marking and timely feedback) are performed to the
required standard.
 To contribute to creating, developing and organising PSE teaching and learning materials and
initiatives in a variety of media for use within and beyond the PSE classroom.
 To demonstrate good practice in teaching, learning and assessment through the use of a wide
range of learning resources and appropriate pedagogic practice, drawing on contemporary
research on the field.
 To ensure that all aspects of PSE course delivery, both teaching and teaching-related, meet the
stated aims and learning outcomes and contribute towards the implementation of relevant
academic initiatives to ensure best practice within the EAP field.
 To contribute to the development, organisation and management of the of the PSE curriculum.
 To provide tutorial support (group and individual) to an agreed number of PSE students, thus
contributing to the wider student experience.
 To offer PSE students an office hour at a regular time during each week of teaching.
 To ensure that all PSE course administration is completed accurately and in a timely manner.
 To attend PSE tutor induction and take an active role in the PSE student induction programme as
required by the Director / Deputy Director or PSE team coordinator.
 To attend a weekly PSE tutor meeting and to address any action points as required.
 To attend (and contribute to) regular PSE tutor development sessions, and to undertake
professional development in support of teaching.
 To reflect critically on your own teaching practice, implement improvements and engage actively
with quality monitoring and enhancement processes.
 To keep up-to-date with academic developments in the field of EAP/ ESP through participation in
internal and external staff development opportunities.
 To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Director / Deputy
Director or PSE team coordinator.
Decision Making, Planning and Problem Solving
 To contribute to collaborative decision making with colleagues on academic content and
assessment of students' work and on the development of the Pre-sessional programme.
 To plan and manage own PSE teaching and tutorials and demonstrate the ability to balance the
needs of students on different programmes.
 To ensure PSE student needs and expectations are met, and to initiate intervention measures if
required.
 To contribute to and engage with internal quality control processes.
 To manage projects related to own area of work.
Service Delivery:
 To respond to requests for information from PSE students in accordance with University policies.
Team Work, Teaching & Learning Support:
 To work effectively as a team member, contributing to working groups (e.g. assessment team),
and where appropriate acting as a buddy for less experienced tutors or tutors new to CU
Services’ PSE courses.
 To provide substitute cover on the PSE course if required.
 To develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and materials to create
interest, enthusiasm and understanding amongst PSE students, and to share best practice with
the team.
 To negotiate an appropriate PSE self-study scheme of work with individual students for the
duration of their PSE course.
 To actively use Moodle and additional e-learning tools to enhance for teaching and learning on
PSE courses.
 To be able to relate to PSE students with diverse backgrounds, ages and experience.
Sensory/Physical Demands & Work Environment:
 To balance competing pressures of PSE teaching and administrative demands and deadlines.
 To work across the Campus in different Faculty buildings as necessitated by timetabling
constraints, and to optimise the room and furniture arrangements in the teaching and learning
environment.
 To be willing to work abroad to teach on in-country PSE courses.
 To be willing to participate in occasional PSE evening activities, e.g. academic or student social
events
Pastoral Care:
 To be responsible for the overall pastoral care of tutees.
 To be sensitive to culture shock and its impact on students during their PSE course.

Education/Qualifications and
Training
Educated to MA level as a
minimum, preferably in
TESOL/Applied Linguistics or
other relevant area, or
currently undertaking an MA
TEAP qualification
RSA/ULCES DELTA (or equivalent)
IELTS examiner status
CELTA (or equivalent)
Knowledge/Skills
Familiarity with the structures
and workings of a university
Familiarity with language
assessment and providing
constructive feedback
Up to date knowledge of EAP
& developments in this field
Competence in the use of IT
tools, including Microsoft
Office, Moodle (or equivalent)
and other tools to support
blended learning
Native speaker standard of
written and spoken English
Experience
EAP background with teaching
