Dr. Camille Ragin has had first-hand experience
and relates to the lack in the quality of
preventative healthcare and education in minority
populations. Her interest in infectious diseases
and the field of public health aspired her to
pursue a career in biomedical research. In 2000
she earned a Ph.D. in Infectious Diseases and
Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh,
Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH). She
completed her postdoctoral training and MPH
degree in Epidemiology as part of the NCIfunded
Cancer
Education
and
Career
Development Program at the University of
Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI). In 2006, she
established the African-Caribbean Cancer
Consortium,

Lola Bamigboye is an author, nursing instructor
and advocate for mental wellness. She has a law
degree as well as a master’s degree in psychiatric
nursing. She has more than twenty years of
experience in the field of psychiatric nursing
through various roles. She has a private practice,
focusing on individual, marriage and family
counseling. She is the author of "Winds Against
the Mind" a book that focuses on removing the
stigma from mental health problems and also
simplifying the understanding of common mental
illnesses for the general public and the academic
community.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
PURPOSE
Scholarly Events Day and the Mary
Starke Harper Lecture Series is a
continuation of efforts to achieve
scholarly excellence in the School of
Nursing and Allied Health. The focus
is the role of research and other
scholarly endeavors in the enhancement
of the quality of life of the clients we
serve, and in the education of students
in the health care professions.
Additionally, the symposium provides
an opportunity for participants to
examine and/or integrate ethical issues
related to health care dilemma. Faculty
and students are given an opportunity
to interact with clinicians, clinical
researchers,
administrators,
and
educators and to establish a forum for
discussing major health care issues.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of workshop, the
attendees will be better able to:
1. Discuss strategies to reduce the rate
of fetal, infant, child, adolescent and
young adult’s death
2. Identify measures to decrease
Cesarean section birth rate in low risk
women
3. Discuss the goals, topic areas and
objectives in Healthy People 2020 and
their relevance to improving health in
childbearing families.
4. Evaluate methods to increase the
proportion of women delivering a life
birth who received preconception care
services.
