Anyone seen driving carelessly will be asked to leave.

Hackney horses or ponies eligible for a Novice Class may not have been a Novice Champion at the

Annual National Breed Show or won the Novice of the year. They may only compete as a Novice for three seasons from the start of their first show. (Not consecutive seasons).

All Hackney horses/ponies must be recognised in the studbook of the UK Hackney Horse Society or of a recognised Hackney Society Abroad, and all exhibitors, drivers and grooms must be members of the Hackney Horse Society. Minimum age of a driver in open and novice classes will be 14 years at date of show.

All Hackney Classes will Be Judged under Hackney Horse Society Rules.

Class 1. Novice Hackney Pony

Ponies aged 4 years and over, stallion, mare or gelding not exceeding 14hh. Exhibits to be shown to a

Box/Show wagon, or Viceroy with traditional brass mounted, black hackney harness. A whip need not be carried, but must be on the vehicle.

Class 2. Ridden Registered Hackney or Part Bred Hackney

Registered Hackney or Registered Part Bred Hackney, Stallion, Mare or Gelding, four years old or over, to be ridden. To be judged as a Hackney under saddle, the animal must be able to walk, trot, canter, be well mannered and a suitable all round ridden animal. Presentation and turnout to be taken into consideration.

Height of action is not important.

Class 3. Novice Hackney Horse

Horses aged 4 years and over, stallion, mare or gelding exceeding 14hh. Exhibits to be shown to a

Box/Show Wagon or Viceroy with traditional brass mounted, black hackney harness. A whip need not be carried, but must be on the vehicle.

Novice Hackney Championship

For 1 st and 2 nd prize winners from classes 1 and 3

Class 4. BDS Open Exercise Vehicle

Ponies 4 years or over as a single, pair or tandem driven to a carriage of non-traditional type and including those with pneumatic tyres specifically designed for carriages (i.e. not car tyres). Lamps need not be carried. Judging will include general cleanliness, safety of turnout, correct fitting of harness and vehicle suitability. Commercial and hackney wagons will not be accepted. Spares kits must be carried.

There will be a special award given to the highest placed young driver.

Class 5. Open Hackney Pony

Open to any registered hackney stallion, mare or gelding not exceeding 14hh. Exhibits to be shown to a

Box/Show Wagon or Viceroy with traditional brass mounted, black hackney harness. A whip need not be carried, but must be on the vehicle.

Class 6. BDS Open Cobs in Show Wagon

Open to any Single registered Welsh Cob stallion, mare or Gelding. Exhibits to be shown to a Box/Show

Wagon or Viceroy with traditional brass mounted, black harness. A whip need not be carried, but must be on the vehicle.

Class 7. Amateur Gentleman Whip (Hackneys Only)

Animals exhibited in Amateur Classes must be suitable for and driven by an Amateur. Professional Whips, anyone consistently driving for other people or those dealing in or selling horses on commission are not eligible. Horses/Ponies must have good mouths (driven double cheek or half cheek) and manners. Drop nosebands are not permitted. A whip must be carried.

Class 8. BDS Open Private Driving

Horses 4 years and over to a traditional or traditional type vehicle. A traditional vehicle means a vehicle of traditional profile and identifiable type to resemble the design of a carriage built prior to the First World

War. The vehicle may be made from modern materials but must have traditional style springing and carriage lamps. Pneumatic tyred vehicles, trade turnouts and show wagons are not eligible.

Class 9. Junior Whip in Wagons

Hackney Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old or over, suitable for and to be driven by a Junior Whip who has not attained their 18th birthday on 1st January 2014. Entries must be registered in the studbook of the

UK Hackney Horse Society or of a recognised Hackney Society Abroad. Minimum age 10 years at date of show. All exhibitors must wear a British Standard Safety Helmet with chin strap. To be judged on the driver’s ability, also manners and performance of the animal. Horses/ponies must have good mouths

(driven double cheek or half cheek); drop nosebands are not permitted. A whip must be carried. To be judged at park pace, exhibits will be required to do a stand show. Dress rules apply .

Class 10. Open Hackney Horse

Class 11. Amateur Lady Whip (Hackneys only)

Animals exhibited Amateur Classes must be suitable for and driven by an Amateur. Horses/Ponies must have good mouths (driven double cheek or half cheek) and manners. Drop nosebands are not permitted. A whip must be carried.

Class 12. Part Bred to a waggon.

Open to any Part Bred Hackney stallion, mare or Gelding. Exhibits to be shown to a Box/Show Wagon or

Viceroy with traditional brass mounted, black harness. A whip need not be carried, but must be on the vehicle.

Class 13. BDS Open Beginners Class

This class is designed for those who have never been in the ring before or have a very inexperienced pony/horse. The class will not be judged as such simply assessed, advice and help given, questions from competitors are encouraged. Rosettes are not awarded therefore novice status is not impaired. Run as a usual class with all the help you require.

BDS Show Championship

Open to 1 st and 2 nd prize winners from classes 2, 4, 6 and 10

1.

The judge’s decision is final regarding all matters.

2.

All turnouts must have valid third party insurance.

3.

Any classes may be split, amalgamated or cancelled on the day.

4.

No animal under 4 years old may compete.

5.

Any entry may be refused at the secretary’s discretion.

6.

Numbers must be collected from the secretary on the day.

7.

Only current BDS members may take part in the BDS Classes, and must show a current membership card when collecting their numbers.

8.

The organisers do not accept liability for any accident, damage, injury or illness to horses, ponies, drivers, and spectators or any other persons or property what so ever.

9.

The use of snaffle bits (2 and 4 ring), hackamores, martingales, side-reins, draw reins, kicking straps etc. are not permitted. Bearing reins may be used but overchecks are not permitted.

10.

All horses, ponies, drivers and ring handlers in the hackney classes must be registered with the

Hackney Horse Society.

11.

Drivers and Grooms who are under the age of 14 years and who are participating in any class are required to wear a hard hat which fits and is properly secured whilst on any horse drawn vehicle and this includes Grooms under the age of 14 who have dismounted to assist with the horse.

12.

Young drivers entering any BDS Class must have a responsible adult seated with them at all times.

By entering this show, competitors are acknowledging they are taking part in a risk activity and that they are competent drivers at this level.
