The school has a curriculum directed toward a mastery of the languages of the liberal arts and sciences. As such, all students pursue programs that emphasize the acquisition of basic skills in writing, reading, mathematics, the sciences, ancient or modern languages, history and political science, and the fine arts. We limit class size to fifteen and stress educational diversity within a traditional and disciplined framework. The Upper School’s 275 students are drawn from the local area, New York City, Connecticut, and New Jersey representing various economic, social, and racial backgrounds. Over ninety-five percent of our students attend college upon graduation. There are presently seventy-five students in the class of 2014. ACADEMIC OFFERINGS AND REQUIREMENTS The academic year is divided into trimesters. We award one credit for a trimester course and three credits for a full-year course. A minimum of sixty credits is required for graduation. Normally, students earn fifteen credits a year. To earn a diploma, a student must satisfy the following distribution requirements: English (12 credits), mathematics (9 credits), History (12 credits), foreign language (6 credits), laboratory sciences (9 credits), and the arts (3 credits). All courses at Harvey are college preparatory, for we assume that all our students expect to pursue a high education. We therefore offer Advanced Placement courses in every discipline, and encourage all our students to participate in this program according to their particular abilities and interests. We offer classical and modern languages (Latin, Spanish, and Japanese) and a number of elective courses in the arts, English, history, and other humanities. CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM The school has a strong co-curricular and sports program to complement its academic program. The program’s purpose is not only to allow the student to pursue his or her individual interests but also to provide a structure in which a student will be able to exercise a position of constructive leadership. The school is committed to expanding its co-curricular offerings and encouraging the participation of its entire student body in the sports, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities. Participation in after-school activities is mandatory for day students in grades 6-10 and all boarding students. GRADING SYSTEM There are five letter grades, A through D and F. D- is the lowest passing grade. The trimester grade in a given course is determined by averaging equally the two marking period grades and the trimester final examination grade. The year grade is determined by averaging the three trimester grades. For purposes of averaging each letter grade is assigned a numerical value. A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C - = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0. Class average and quintile rank are determined by averaging all major courses. Courses in honors and advanced placement courses will be averaged as a 4.3 and an A in an advanced placement course will be averaged as a 4.6. Winter term grades will be sent to colleges in mid March 2014. CLASS RANKING Students at The Harvey School are ranked by quintile. In order to help you evaluate our students, we are providing a scale that represents the cumulative grade point average of students from this year’s senior class in the various quintiles, as of September 2013. 1st Quintile 3.63 — 4.25 2nd Quintile 3.39 — 3.62 3rd Quintile 3.15 — 3.38 4th Quintile 2.95 — 3.14 5th Quintile 2.14 — 2.94 THE HARVEY SCHOOL College Placement: 2013-2014 Members of the graduating class of 2012 and 2013 were accepted into the following colleges and universities: (Asterisk “*” denotes a matriculated school for class of 2012 and 2013.)
