MPhil/DPhil Creative Practices
Project Description (max 300 words)
This programme of research is aimed at students seeking to combine composition with
collaborative arts practices and technologies. Students will be encouraged to explore
interdisciplinary collaborative processes, to find and follow their own particular path, to be
prepared to take artistic risks, to constantly examine and question their ideas and those of
others, in the process (re)defining their own aesthetic and practices.
The research programme is suitable for those seeking to combine musical composition with any
arts activities which embody practical components: technologies, performance, theatre,
choreography, ethnic music…
The training includes an induction period, research skills training, exploration and a
requirement to present your research work on a regular basis. The student will receive one-toone tutorials with two allocated Research Supervisors.
Research degree candidates will normally register initially for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil),
giving students the space and time to develop methodologies and refine their area of research.
During the first two years, students will disseminate their work by delivering presentations,
seminars, or public performances of the research in progress. At the end of each academic
year, a short presentation is mandatory for progression to the next year of research and after
two years registration, application for transfer to PhD status may be considered.
