- TIPS
It’s hard to believe that we have reached the halfway point of the school year! It seems like just
yesterday that our Roberts Whales were walking through the front doors with their new backpacks
and shiny shoes.
As we continue through the year, please keep in mind a few tips for improving your child’s educational
experience.





Talk to your child about what they are learning in class each day.
Check your child’s backpack for homework or notes.
Continue to read with your child every night.
Make sure your child arrives on time each morning.
If you have any questions, please talk to your child’s teacher.
Together, we will create an outstanding learning experience for all our Roberts Whales!
By the end of 3rd grade, it is essential that students have a mastery of their multiplication facts in order
to succeed in higher level mathematics. These multiplication facts form the foundation they will need
to understand more challenging concepts such as division, fractions, and algebra. A higher level
understanding of multiplication facts will help to relieve frustration as your child learns new concepts
in the coming years. Working at home on basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division) is a great way to strengthen your child’s mathematic understanding in any grade. A couple of
great websites to use at home are coolmathgames.com and khanacademy.org. These sites are a great
resource for students in any grade level!
All Utica schools will be closed for mid-winter recess from Monday, February 16, through Friday,
February 20, 2015. School will resume on Monday, February 23rd. Enjoy the break!
Kindergarten Open House will be Wednesday, March 18th @ 7:00 p.m.
Have a terrific February!
John Hurley
Roberts Elementary Principal
The Roberts Educational Community will provide a foundation for lifelong
learning. Together, we will foster responsible citizenship, intellectual curiosity,
and academic excellence.
Success Starts Here! 2015 Kindergarten Open House is March 18
Parents of children who will be starting kindergarten in Utica Community
Schools in fall 2015 can begin the registration process at the Roberts
Elementary kindergarten open house on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
At the open house, parents will have the opportunity to learn about our
nationally-recognized kindergarten program, meet the teachers and building
staff and submit school registration forms.
Children are eligible for kindergarten if they turn five years old on or before
September 1, 2015. However, children who turn five between September 1
and December 1, 2015 are eligible to enroll in kindergarten if their parents
submit a waiver form.
More kindergarten open house information and forms are available on the
UCS Web site: http://www.uticak12.org.
Common Core
As we continue to provide world class instruction for all of our Roberts Whales, we are now
fully integrated into the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Math and English Language
Arts. As parents, you should see an increased emphasis on deeper understand of concepts. The
standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge
and skill that our students need for success in college and careers.
I would encourage all of our parents to view the link provided below and become more familiar
with the Common Core and what your child will be working on in each grade. If you have any
questions regarding the Common Core, please stop in a see me. I would love to work with you
to better your understanding and how you can support you child at home as we move forward
with the new standards.
