Greece became first developed nation to default on IMF debt
Greece became the first advanced economy to default on an International Monetary
Fund (IMF) repayment with its failure to repay the roughly $1.8bn to the IMF the largest, single missed repayment in the IMF’s history. The last country to do so was
Zimbabwe in 2001 others are Somalia and Sudan.
The deadline for debt payment was missed by Greece after Eurozone Finance Ministers refused to extend its bailout. They had refused the bailout after Greece rejected the proposal given by International Monetary Fund (IMF), European Central Bank (ECB)
and the European Commission (EC).
Greece made a last-ditch effort to extend its bailout but Eurozone Finance Ministers
refused to extend its bailout to Greece because Greece has rejected the proposal of International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Commission (EC) and European
Central Bank (ECB)
The proposal had asked Greece to raise its primary surplus within two years in order to avail the 15.5 billion Euros of funding, which in turn required pension and tax reforms which will be a problem for the common public of Greece.
Greece has debt worth nearly 180 percent of its GDP after receiving two bailouts worth
$266bn since 2010.
Unemployment has more than doubled since 2009 to 25.6 percent and pensions and benefits have roughly halved between 2010 and 2014.
Impacts of being a defaulter :-
Greece, which is now in arrears, is at a risk of leaving Euro and shifting back to its old currency Drachma. Euro replaced Drachma as a currency of Greece in 2001
Drachma the currency of Greece has lower value than Euro this will lead to increase in the cost of imports which will bring inflation in the Greece economy which the country
is already facing
Failure to repay the IMF could push the European Central Bank on Wednesday to ask
Greek banks for more assets if they want more money. The ECB has been keeping Greek banks alive with 89bn euros of emergency funding
Impact on Indian economy:-
Europe is India’s largest trading partner with 129 billion US dollars of merchandise trade registered in 2014-15. Of this the European Union accounted for 97 billion US dollars with the
UK, Germany, France and Italy being the leading partners.India will face loss on its exports especially engineering goods for which is the Europe is the largest destination

Cuba becomes the first country to officially eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission
World Health Organisation has announced that Cuba has become the first country to eliminate the transmission of HIV and syphilis from mother to baby
Approximately 14,100 individuals (0.2 percent of the population) in Cuba are living with
HIV/AIDS the virus is transmitted via commercial sex work, and it's linked to cultural and behavioral patterns and a lack of access to protective measures.
CURRENT AFFAIRS-JULY
The act of eliminating mother-to-child transmissions of HIV and syphilis means more than improved outcomes for the children of infected parties, but it means hope for a cure.
In 2013, only two babies were born with HIV in Cuba, and only five born with congenital syphilis.
Scientists have said eradicating Aids is feasible if HIV prevention continues to grow, even if there is no cure. The reduction in infection rates in Cuba is seen as a major breakthrough in the campaign to rid the world of the virus.
The number children born annually with HIV was 400,000 in 2009.By 2013, the number was down to 240,000 in 2013.But intense effort is needed to meet the global target of less than 40,000 new child infections per year by 2015
Globally, more than 35 million adults and children are living with HIV but the infection rate has slowed significantly, with 2.1 million becoming HIV positive in 2013, down from 2.9 million in
2005
"It shows that ending the AIDS epidemic is possible and we expect Cuba to be the first of many countries coming forward to seek validation that they have ended their epidemics among children" said Michel Sidibe, executive director of the United Nations AIDS agency.

Union Government hiked national floor-level minimum wage to 160 rupees per day
The Union Government in June 2015 increased the national floor-level minimum wage (NFLMW) to 160 rupees per day from 137 rupees per day. The new rate will be effective from 1 July 2015.
If states revise their minimum wages as per the new NFLMW, the decision is expected to benefit millions of workers in the scheduled employments in the respective state jurisdictions.
It was implemented for the first time in 1996 on the basis of the recommendations of the National
Commission on Rural Labour (NCRL) under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948.
It is a non-statutory measure and after every revision, the State Governments are persuaded to fix minimum wages such that in none of the scheduled employments, the minimum wage is less than NFLMW.

Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) developed the
GAGAN system, at a cost of Rs. 774 crore, over 15 years
India is the fourth country after US, Japan and Europe, to offer space-based satellite navigation services to the aviation sector.
The launch of GAGAN system has bridged the gap in the coverage areas of the
European Union’s European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) and
Japan’s Multi-functional Satellite Augmentation System (MSAS).
Facts about "GAGAN" system:-
It provides very accurate information on the location of an aircraft in terms of latitude, longitude and height, along with velocity and time
GAGAN provides efficient navigation system and provide shorter routes so it will improve efficiency and increase fuel savings.
GAGAN will also help in vertical guidance at runways, significant cost savings due to withdrawal of ground aids and reduced workload of flight crew and Air Traffic
Controllers
Currently Air Traffic Controllers read aircraft movement from GPS signals, they leave more than 50 meters as a margin of error while GAGAN reduces the error margin to 3.5 metres.

Sri Lanka signs agreement with Google to launch Project Loon by 2016
Government of Sri Lanka had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Google to launch the Google Loon project in the country to provide affordable high-speed internet services to the entire country
The service will be provided with the aid of Google loon, a technology which provides
Internet to large areas using high-altitude balloons under this agreement Google will launch the helium-filled, high-tech balloons above the Indian Ocean island in coming months.
The entire Sri Lankan island - every village from (southern) Dondra to (northern) Point
Pedro - will be covered with affordable high speed Internet using Google Loon's balloon technology
Successful implementation of this project will make Sri Lanka the first country in the region with complete coverage.
There are 2.8 million mobile Internet connections and 606,000 fixed line Internet subscribers among Sri Lanka's more than 20 million population.
Sri Lanka became the first country in South Asia to introduce mobile phones in 1989 and the first to roll out a 3G network in 2004. It was also the first in the region to unveil a 4G network two years ago.
What is Project Loon
Project Loon is a research and development project being developed by Google with the mission of providing Internet access to rural and remote areas. The project uses highaltitude balloons placed in the stratosphere at an altitude of about 32 km (20 mi) to
create an aerial wireless network with up to 3G-like speed
These balloons have transceivers which can connect to cell phone networks filling gaps
in their networks especially in remote areas such as mountains and deserts
Service providers will be able to access higher speeds and improve the quality of their
existing service once the balloon project is up and running, the prices will also come down
The balloons, once in the stratosphere, will be twice as high as commercial airliners and barely visible to the naked eye
CURRENT AFFAIRS-JULY
Google plans to keep the balloons aloft in the stratosphere for 100 days, transmitting
Internet signals to the ground, and with their movements guided by an algorithmic formula , testing of the project have already been done in New Zealand
