Mountain Zone Water Polo Board of Directors Meeting Minutes October 1, 2013 I. Call to order Vaune called to order the regular meeting of the Mountain Zone Water Polo Board at 7:01pm on October 1, 2013 via Conference Call. II. Roll call Brandon Huffman conducted a roll call. The following persons were present: Vanune Kadlubek, Joe Peila, Nicholas Games, Jeff Reed, Don Lewis and Brenna Hayes III. Open issues a) Rocky Mountain October Classic: Refs going, Gary C going and Don can’t go. It’s a small tournament. b) Mountain Zone Website: Website not up to date. Vaune sending to Claudia to get it updated. Webmaster: Tyson set up website, someone has to take it over. Brandon will ask Duke parent if she’d be interested. Would need her contact info if yes. Need to update it with all ODP, tournament info, representative info, etc. c) Zone Meeting: Bylaws state that each zone shall hold a Zone meeting open to all it’s residents to conduct elections, spread word of the programs etc. Usually held in Fall. In the past this was done as a conference call open to all members of USA Water Polo in the Zone. The meeting would be held in one place in each zone with their representative and everyone will be on the same conference call. Representatives should set up a location and inform their constituents within their respective states. Vaune will also be sending an email to all USA Water Polo members to inform them. Date & Time: looking into Saturday December 14th, 9am. This time and date is tentative. Other weekends before that all have conflicts. Vaune will check into seeing if we have any elections pending for this meeting. d) Tournaments: Please send tournaments your hosting to board so can put on calendar. Mountain Zone Tournament: Send out bid packet to Mountain Zone coaches and go from there. If Kearns doesn’t host Brad is expecting to host his own tournament anyway. Looking into an earlier time, but in the bid packet it’ll be for sometime in June. Adding to the bidding packet that only Mountain Zone teams can participate. Packets due Feb 1st so have 3 months (as supposed to one month) to get it set up. Spring Tournaments: Scottsdale Tournament in Arizona in January, ODP Girls tournament 3rd weekend of March in Vegas and then boys in Texas the 4th weekend of March, and Duke Tournament April 11th to 13th. In November ODP Girls (weekend before) in Albuquerque and Boys in Utah 22-24th.Held at UNLV, November 8th-10th Kapp 7 Championship Women’s Open Tournament (Coastal Zone Event). e) Membership Growth in the Mountain Zone: Precedent from past meetings held that this Agenda item involved each state reporting the growth of USAWP membership in their respective States. Growth Ideas: Some kind of water polo clinic was hosted by a representative from USAWP National teams came. Would be awesome for Men’s or Women’s team to drop by zone, helps grow sport and excitement. Splash ball, clinics etc will also help grow the sport. Discussed that communication has been lacking and has been a deterrent to growth. USAWP is making efforts to make itself more inclusive and better especially for zones outside of California and we will make more efforts to communicate effectively within our Zone. f) Zone Awards: Send nominations email out to whole zone. Board will vote who wins nominations. g) USAWP Hall of Fame Nominations: Being accepted, see USAWP Hall of Fame website. h) USAWP Refs: Would like to get Brenna and other referees housing and other fees paid when they travel. Especially for things like TYR and Holiday camp. Brenna says it usually ends up costs upwards $300-400. Usually end up doing between 6-10 games, but don’t know exactly how many going to play and thus how much their going to get paid. This is why an application process sounds ideal. Zone consensus seems to be that we deal with this on a case by case basis. Consensus on having a Zone Referee Funding Application that refs can fill out and board can review. Refs apply, show their expenses and we approve reimbursement. Hearing no dissent on this item. Also want to include coaches on this application/reimbursement opportunity for travel. i) JO’s Feedback: Refs felt too tired, coaches felt sidelined and an argument was held between California teams about having Women’s JO’s before the Men’s JO’s. j) FINA and USAWP rule updates: Changes become implemented December 1st. New changes are out there. New rules: #13 cap is reserved for Goalie’s to sub in as a field player and cannot be used as a field player’s cap number except if they are the backup goalie. Another rule states that if man down such that has less than 7 players then don’t have to have a goalie and can just have everyone play as field players. k) ODP Suggestions: Items for improvement? Ask constituents for feedback and send to Vaune. IV. New business a) None heard. V. Adjournment Vaune adjourned the meeting at 8:04. Minutes submitted by: Brandon Huffman Minutes approved by: [Name]
