The Department of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery at Barts Health provides services across the Royal London
Hospital (RLH), St Bartholomew’s (SBH), Whipps Cross (WX), and Newham General (NUH) and provides secondary and tertiary level services to the population of East London, Essex, East Anglia and beyond. We provide sub specialist services in head and neck cancer, voice disorders, rhinology, facial plastics, otology, neuro-otology with gamma knife radiosurgery, and paediatric and neonatal airway.
This document outlines how to access services at Royal London Hospital for urgent and routine referrals.
The following services are provided by the department at Royal London Hospital, and guidelines on how to book into the various clinics are given below.

Patients who require an emergency ENT opinion out of hours should be referred to the oncall ENT SHO via switchboard 020 7377 7000.
‘Out of hours’ is defined as follows –
Monday- Friday 5pm to 9 am
Saturday and Sunday all day
Telephone advice is available to clinicians treating any ENT condition in both adult and paediatric patients, where an appointment is not required. Please call either the ENT Advice Line, where advice will be given by the
ENT Clinical Nurse Practitioner, or the ENT SHO on call.

Please note that the advice line is not currently funded and will therefore run as a pilot for 3 months, and be subject to review. If the service and commissioners wish to continue beyond the pilot, funding arrangements would need to be agreed.
Patients who need to be seen urgently within the next few days should be referred to the emergency clinic, eg suspected fractured noses, otitis externa not responding to topical drops, Bell’s palsy, sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
Clinics are available Monday to Friday, 9.30-11.30
Patients will be given a time slot to attend the clinic (please inform the patient that this is a time slot only, NOT the guaranteed time to be seen)
There will be 4 ‘follow up’ and 4 ‘new patient’ slots available each day. The adult emergency ENT clinic is located in Clinic 5, 1 st Floor, Luckes Entrance, The Royal London Hospital, London E1 1BB
Please ensure that the patient is given the referral letter/document to bring with them, otherwise we will not be able to see them
To book an ENT emergency clinic appointment, contact Central Appointments on 020 7767 3200,
opening hours Monday to Friday 8.30-5.00
If there are no slots available, Central Appointments will call the ENT Advice Line on bleep 1701 and the patient will be triaged over the phone and if necessary an alternative time provided
Out of hours, the patient should be advised to call Central Appointments the following morning to arrange an appointment slot in the next available emergency ENT clinic
Paediatric patients who need to be seen urgently within the next few days should be referred to the emergency clinic, eg acute otitis media, otitis externa, foreign bodies in ear and nose, fractured nose.
Clinics are available twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, 9.00-10.30
Patients will be given a time slot to attend the clinic (please inform the patient that this is a time slot only, NOT the guaranteed time to be seen)
There will be 6 ‘new patient’ slots available each clinic , follow up patients will be seen in the main
Paediatric ENT clinic
The paediatric emergency ENT clinic is located on 6 th floor Children’s Outpatients, The Royal London

Please ensure that the patient is given the referral letter/document to bring with them, otherwise we will not be able to see them
To book a paediatric ENT emergency clinic appointment, contact Central Appointments on 020 7767
3200, opening hours Monday to Friday 8.30-5.00

Suspected cancer referrals need to be stamped at the top of the letter with “2WW" and then faxed to the
Cancer Referral E-Fax number: 020 3594 3278 or booked via Choose and Book. Choose and Book suspected cancer referrals must be uploaded within 1 working day.
URGENT referral letters should be clearly marked at the top in bold, together with the department name – ie
“URGENT – ENT” and the letter should be faxed to the 18 week referral line: 020 3594 3281 or booked via
Choose and Book. Choose and Book urgent referrals must be uploaded within 1 working day. Patients will normally be seen within 4 weeks.
Routine/non-urgent referral letters should be sent by either Chose and Book, post, or fax:
Choose and Book - GPs would need to upload written referral within 3 days working days for routine referrals and within 1 working day for 2ww/urgent referrals
If we DO NOT receive the referral within 5 working days from the date of UBRN conversion we will discharge the patient back to the GP’s care

For urgent short term post-up appointments, the ACAD (Ambulatory Care and Diagnostic Centre) reception team will book the patient into the emergency clinic and they will also fax operation notes/details to clinic.
