The Sleeping Beauty Adapted by K. McKinley SCENE 1 Song: “Fairy Tales” (King and Queen Enter) Narrator #1: Once upon a time in a kingdom faraway, there lived a King and Queen. For many years the King and Queen wished for a child. Finally their wish was granted and they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. (Queen exits and returns with a baby) Narrator #2: To celebrate, the King and Queen decided to throw a party. They invited everyone in the kingdom, including all the fairies—all except one, that is! Fenestere was known throughout the land and was much feared. The King and Queen thought that it would be better if they left her off the guest list. The day of the celebration arrived. The entire kingdom was present to celebrate the birth of the little princess, Briar Rose. (Fairies enter) Song: “Wishes” (Fairies wave wands over the baby the second time through the song) Narrator #3: As the fairies were giving their gifts, a huge gust of wind blew open the doors. It was Fenestere! (Fenestere Enters) Narrator #3: Fenestere was very angry that she had been excluded from the celebration. She said that she had a gift for Briar Rose. Fenestere said that the princess would die on her sixteenth birthday when she pricked her finger on a spinning wheel. (Fenestere Exits) Narrator #4: The last fairy had not yet given her gift, though. Although she could not undo the wicked curse, she could soften it a little. (Last fairy waves her wand over the baby) Narrator #5: The princess would not die when she pricked her finger on the spindle. Instead, she would fall fast asleep until a true prince awakened her with a kiss. Despite this gift, the king ordered that all the spinning wheels be burned. If anyone owned a spinning wheel, they would be put to death! (Exit Everyone) Song: “Fenestere, the Evil Fairy” SCENE 2 Narrator #6: As the years passed, Briar Rose grew to become a beautiful young woman and she brought happiness wherever she went. (Enter Briar Rose, King, and Queen) Narrator #6: On the day of her sixteenth birthday, the King and Queen were called away on important business. (King and Queen wave good-bye and exit) Narrator #7: The princess was left alone in the castle! Briar Rose took this opportunity to explore the castle. She had never been left alone before so this was her first real opportunity to go exploring. Narrator #8: Briar Rose looked in every room and in every closet. Finally, she came upon a staircase that she had never seen before. As she climbed higher and higher, the staircase became narrower and narrower until finally she came to a door. Narrator #9: Inside sat a little old lady spinning thread on a spindle. Briar Rose had never seen this before. As she touched the spindle, she pricked her finger and fell to the ground. The old woman began to laugh a horrible laugh. It was the evil fairy, Fenestere, in disguise! Song: “Fenestere, the Evil Fairy” reprise (Fenestere exits and King and Queen enter) Narrator #10: The King and Queen returned from their business and saw their beautiful daughter fast asleep. They knew exactly what had happened. They sent a messenger to see the good fairies to tell them of the princess’ slumber. (Enter Fairies) Narrator #1: The fairies were sad to think that the princess would wake up in a hundred years to find that everyone she loved was gone. So they decided to put everyone in the kingdom to sleep until the princess was finally awakened. Song: “Slumber Song” (Fairies walks around and waves wand. Everyone on stage falls asleep at the end of the song.) SCENE 3 (Townspeople enter and pretend to talk to one another) Narrator #2: A hundred years had passed by and still the kingdom was asleep. A thicket of bushes, vines, and thorns had grown around the castle. Many princes had tried to enter the palace but they could not get past the thicket. One day a prince from a neighboring kingdom happened upon the castle. (Enter Prince) Narrator #3: He asked many of the townspeople to tell him what had happened and they all gave him different stories. One villager said that a giant lived in the castle and stole little children that didn’t mind their parents and teachers. Another spoke of a band of witches that used the castle for secret meetings. Narrator #4: Finally, and old man of some eighty years told the prince of a beautiful princess doomed to sleep forever unless a prince rescued her from the magic spell. The prince was sure that he was the one to break the spell. Song: “Prince Charming Rap” (Exit Everyone) SCENE 4 Narrator #5: The prince had cut through the thicket without a problem. As he walked through the castle, he noticed that everyone was asleep. (Prince pretends to cut through thicket) Narrator #6: He walked all through the castle in search of the sleeping princess. Everywhere he went he saw people asleep at their work. (Prince walks around and pretends to open doors and look around) Narrator #7: At last the prince came to the room of the princess. He walked over to where she lay sleeping, knelt down, and gave her a kiss. (Prince gives a horrified look at the narrator and shakes the princess’ hand.) Narrator #8: The prince’s… uh… kiss broke the spell and the whole kingdom was released. (Students on risers yawn and stretch) Narrator #9: The danger was not over, however. The evil Fenestere appeared! She was very angry that her spell was broken. Just as she was about to cast a spell, the prince grabbed her wand out of her hand. Without her wand, Fenestere was powerless! The last fairy then appeared and banished Fenestere to a dark cave beneath the earth. (Enter Last Fairy. She waves her wand and Fenestere falls to the ground.) Narrator #10: The whole kingdom celebrated and the prince and princess were married. Song: “Fairy Tales” reprise THE END
