TERMS… in your own words (In the order you will learn them) (For more formal definition of these terms, see LTW Glossary in back of both the Teacher’s Guide and the Student Workbook) Words Canon Composition noun - Words are the method we use to share our thoughts with others noun - An established rule or principle – or – a standard or model to judge by (Canon of Scripture) noun – the manner in which parts (words) of a thing (essay) are put together Invention Arrangement Elocution noun - How to come up with something to say noun - How to select, sort and organize your ideas noun - How we express our thoughts in the best possible way Exposition Enumeration noun- Statement of the main points in an essay or speech noun- Statement of the number of reasons you use to support your thesis Issue Thesis noun - A point of debate or a point of controversy (This is your “whether” question) noun - A statement put forth for discussion (We change “whether” question to a statement) Sort Rudimentary verb – to separate and arrange by kind adj - very imperfectly developed; fundamental Definition Comparison Circumstance Relation Authority noun – stating unique qualities of your character noun – how characters are similar and how are they different noun – what is happening at the time/place of your issue noun – questions about cause and effect noun – Who says what about your subject? A pattern. Our template is the form we follow when we make an outline for essays An argument in defense of a thesis 1) main reason(s) or argument(s) that defend our position/thesis. (In our essays, each main proof is supported by three sub-proofs.) thinking out in advance (like Prometheus) action taken that was not thought out in advance (like Epimetheus) the alignment of words, phrases and clauses in repetitive grammatical form ordinary language used in writing and speaking writing usually with a rhythm that repeats; words chosen and arranged to create a certain emotional response through meaning, sound and rhythm Lost Tools of Writing – List of Terms 1 Scheme noun An arrangement of words appealing to the senses (examples: a rhyming scheme or the scheme of parallelism) Term noun A term is a word that names a thing. Example: The term for a writing instrument that is made of wood, with a slender strip of graphite down the center and an eraser on one end is “pencil.” Definition noun 1) A definition of a word sets the limits within which a word has meaning 2) One of the Five Common Topics of Invention Characteristic noun a special quality that makes a person or thing different from others in the same group… a distinguishing trait Exordium noun the opening or first part of the Introduction to your essay or speech.
