Resources for Purchase by NHS Medicines Information Services January 2016 This is a list of resources which should be considered for purchase (books, databases, websites/web-based resources, journals etc.). These resources are those needed for an MI service to provide a safe and efficient service to users. This list should be used in conjunction with ‘Resources with Free Access for NHS Medicines Information Services’ in order to provide a comprehensive service. Other UKMi resources give guidance on what resources to use for different enquiry types, e.g. UKMi workbook, Enquiry Answering Guidelines. There is also guidance on the risks associated with the use of various resources available in Limitations of Common Information Sources used by UKMi. The resources are organised into general subject categories. It is recognised that the requirements of individual MI centres (MICs) are different and will depend on the service offered by each centre, the size of the base hospital, and the nature of the Trust in which the unit is situated. Where this affects the holding of a resource, this is indicated. ISBN numbers are included when appropriate and approximate costs stated (see also UKMi Discounted Subscriptions section and Appendix 1 below). Editions and associated publication dates are also included. It is recommended that resources are accessed online where possible as this will provide the most up-to-date information. Resources are annotated ‘C’ or ‘A’ where: C = Core resources* for all MICs to hold (local and regional)*. A = Additional resources recommended to support services locally based on enquiry type and Trust speciality. For audit purposes, it is acceptable if you can justify not keeping a particular core resource due to: Lack of relevant enquiry type received or Appropriate relevant resources available elsewhere and easily accessible *There is no differentiation between local and regional centres in terms of recommended resources. The ‘core’ or ‘additional’ resources are applicable to all MI centres. When assessing your access to the resources also check http://www.library.nhs.uk (or http://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk in Scotland or http://www.wales.nhs.uk/ in Wales) to see if you have electronic access to the most up-to-date edition. UKMi are aware that various ‘Apps’ are available for health information resources. UKMi do not intend to formally review the content or endorse the use of such Apps at this time. However, if an ‘App’ is available as another platform for an already endorsed UKMi resource, this may be highlighted as being available. Costs and UKMi Discounted Subscriptions UKMi has negotiated a number of discounted subscriptions for resources, and are indicated in the list with *UKMi Deal*. Further details of discounts are provided in Appendix 1. For other resources, actual cost may fluctuate and therefore have been banded according to approximate cost: £ ££ £££ ££££ £££££ = £1 - £50 = £51 - £100 = £101 - £150 = £151 - £300 = >£300 Updating the List The Essential Resources list will be updated with new editions etc. on a quarterly basis and details of any updated resources will be published on the UKMi website. The Clinical Governance Working Group will formally review the contents of the Essential Resources list annually. Updates to the list will be reflected in the MiDatabank master list. Suggestions for additions/deletions or general comments on this document can be forwarded to laura.kearney@uhl-tr.nhs.uk or via your Regional Centre.
