Guidelines
Dean’s Research Awards 2015
The Dean’s Research Awards reward and recognise excellent research performance of various
kinds. Categories, and approaches to each, are as follows, with the Dean to be provided a
shortlist of recommended recipients from a sub-panel comprised of members of the Arts &
Social Sciences Research Committee
Best Monograph
Best Monograph by an Early Career
Researcher
Research (Scholarly) Impact Award
Research (Society) Impact Award
Achievements by an Early Career
Researcher
Achievements in Research Leadership
Best unpublished manuscript by an
ECR or HDR completer
By nomination - awarded for the best scholarly
monograph of the year, published in 2014 by a
FASS researcher
By nomination - awarded for the best scholarly
monograph published in 2014, by an Arts &
Social Sciences early career researcher
By short application - awarded to an individual
or small team who demonstrate significant
scholarly impact from a particular piece of
research
By short application - awarded to an individual
or small team who demonstrate significant
broader societal impact from a particular piece
of research
By nomination and examination of research
outputs - recognising the efforts and
productivity of a staff member within first 5
years post- PhD completion
By nomination - recognising a staff member
who has made a significant contribution to the
research efforts of their peers and colleagues
By short application - this award is intended to
support academics employed at UNSW. It is
open only to early career researchers or HDR
candidates who have/will complete during
2014/2015.
Arts & Social Sciences will fund the winning
manuscript to be submitted to the editorial
scrutiny and revision processes of UNSW
Press. Once that process is complete, and
with advice from UNSW Press, the Faculty will
decide whether to subsidise publication of the
manuscript. Note: Works that have been
accepted for publication but which are not yet
published are ineligible

Self-nominations are allowed, however must be accompanied by support from a second UNSW
Arts & Social Sciences staff member.
Application Process
Applications should use the appropriate application form provided and adhere to page limits
stated therein. Applications must be submitted by close of business Wednesday, 25 March
2015.
Applications should be submitted to the Faculty Research Office via sofia@unsw.edu.au.

3. Justification for Nomination
Provide a short justification for the nomination, guided by the award being proposed and be max one
page.
Justifications should include, for example, the following:
Best Monograph & ECR Monographs – an indication of the quality and significance of the
monograph, as well as details of the publisher;
Research (Scholarly & Society) Impact Awards – a brief outline of the particular piece of research
and how it has demonstrated significant scholarly or broader social impact over time. The nominated

staff member’s specific contribution to the research – if multiple researchers involved and nominating
an individual only – should also be explained;
Achievements by an Early Career Researcher – briefly highlight the scholarly achievements of the
staff member within their first 5 years post- PhD completion;
Achievements in Research Leadership – briefly indicate the collegiality of the nominated staff
members, show how they have made a significant contribution to the research efforts of their peers
and colleagues
Best unpublished manuscript by an ECR or HDR completer that meets UNSW Press scholarly
publishing guidelines – an indication of the quality of the research and potential significance of the
manuscript, evidence will be highly regarded for example examiners reports should be included
where applicable (HDR completer applicants).Shortlisted applicants for this award will be asked to
provide a copy of the manuscript.
