Who is Fifi Divine?
Sara is in a flurry of activity because they are expecting new guests on the farm. As she does her part
to ready the farm, she passes various members of her family, who are introduced. The guests arrive
and Sara meets Roberto, whom Sara barrages with a ton of questions about his family and all of their
adventures as she shows him around the farm. She longs for adventure and travel; someplace away
from her ordinary life on the farm. During the walks she also talks about Fifi, her imaginary friend.
The next day on the school bus, Sara is drawing a picture of Fifi in her notebook. Eddie, a pesky boy
on the bus, questions her about Fifi, and makes fun of her for having an imaginary friend. Sara
defends Fifi and during this tirade we learn more about Fifi’s characteristics and aspirations.
Later that night, after all of her chores Sara looks longingly at an old dog-eared copy of National
Geographic magazine. It has exotic pictures of fabulous faraway places. In her diary she writes to Fifi
and speaks about how wonderful it would be to be in all of those places, learning new languages,
eating new foods, and meeting new people from all around the world. She falls asleep on the diary.
In her dream she wakes up in one of the exotic places she’s read about. A sassy, blonde girl walks up
to Sara and she immediately knows that it’s Fifi. They discuss Sara’s desire to see the world and Fifi
tells her that she knows the way to all sorts of places. They pop from Italy, to France, from Australia
to the beaches of the Caribbean. In a collage and whirlwind of activity they flit from place to place, so
much so that Sara feels breathless. “Slow down,” she begs Fifi, “I want to have time to see them all!”
Finally, they come to rest on a bridge overlooking Sydney Harbor where Fifi gives her a friendship
bracelet. On the bracelet she fastens a charm of a compass, saying, “Only your heart can be your true
compass.”
In the morning, Sara wakes up and peels her face off of the diary. Realizing that she’s dreamed it all
and that Fifi is just as imaginary as she had been the day before, she goes to get ready for school.
When she opens her sock drawer something falls to the floor. It is the charm bracelet from Fifi.
Picking it up and holding it close, Sara smiles. Her adventures are about to begin.
