Jessamine County Athletic Achievement Award
Purpose
The Jessamine County Athletic Achievement Award is organized as a means of
recognizing, preserving and promoting the heritage of interscholastic athletics in
Jessamine County. Many individuals have made extraordinary contributions and have
had superb accomplishments in high school athletics. The Achievement Award honors
the contributions and accomplishments of these individuals who are worthy of
recognition as examples for others to emulate.
Selection Process
The Jessamine County Athletic Achievement Award will be governed by the Jessamine
County Athletic Advisory Council. The Jessamine County Athletic Advisory Council is
under the control of the Superintendent and Board of Education. The Jessamine County
Athletic Advisory Council includes equal representation from East and West High
Schools. The council also includes equal community representation from East and West
High Schools.
The selection process will be chaired by the District Athletic Director. The Deputy
Superintendent is an ex-officio member of Council and will be the school district
consultant during the selection process. The council will submit recommended award
recipient names to the Board of Education for final approval.
The Recipients for the first two years will be representative of and from Jessamine
County High School which will include Nicholasville High School, Dunbar High School
and Wilmore High School. The Recipients after the first two years will include equal
representation from East and West High Schools. The Recipients will be formally
introduced each year during half-time of the East vs. West football game.
The first two years the maximum number of inductees will be five. Beginning the third
year and each year thereafter the maximum number of inductees will be six – three from
East Jessamine High School and three from West Jessamine High School. The Jessamine
County Athletic Advisory Council reserves the right after the first two years to add one
additional inductee each year that had an affiliation with Jessamine County High School,
Nicholasville High School, Dunbar High School and Wilmore High School..
Nomination Categories
Individuals may be nominated representing the categories defined below. The categories
of athlete, coach and contributor are included on the nomination form. The grouping is
for screening purposes to assist the council in understanding the types of information
required.
Athlete: A former high school athlete whose achievements as a high school athlete were
extraordinary and merit recognition. Athlete shall have completed high school at least
five (5) years prior to being eligible for nomination. Athletes who are being nominated
are to be considered solely for their achievements in interscholastic athletics in Jessamine
County. An athlete who is deceased prior to high school graduation will be considered on
their achievements prior to death.
Coach: A coach whose accomplishments as a high school coach merit recognition or
former high school coach who has been inactive as a coach for a minimum of three
school years whose accomplishments as a high school coach merit recognition. Coaches
would be considered on their merits of high school coaching achievements in Jessamine
County.
Contributor: An individual who has made outstanding contributions to athletics in some
capacity other than athlete or coach including such avenues as community athletic
involvement/support, athletic administration, sports medicine, and sports media.
Requirements for Nomination
In order to maintain the integrity of the selection process the following criteria are
established for nominations:
A) Nominees must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical
conduct and moral character. All nominees will be judged on their significant
and/or long term contributions to athletics in Jessamine County.
B) Nominees whose careers ended 5 or more years ago and who are deceased will
be considered against accomplishments of their contemporaries, as much as is
possible. It is suggested that additional support material be included, such as
letters from individuals who had some involvement with the nominee.
C) All applications must clearly indicate the status of each candidate as it is related
to the defined categories.
Nomination Procedures
The following shall be utilized for nominations:
A) The official nomination form approved by the Superintendent and Jessamine
County Board of Education is available on the Jessamine County website or from
the District Athletic Director. *Nominations for selection are to be submitted
to District Athletic Director by April 29 of each year.
B) Any nomination received which does not contain active and current address and
contact information for the nominee (or family if deceased) will not be
considered.
C) In addition to the Superintendent/Board of Education approved nomination form,
the following should be submitted for a nominee to be considered:
a. No more than five letters of recommendation from both the person making
the nomination and others who support the nominee and note nominee’s
athletic achievement.
b. A limited number of newspaper clippings, magazine articles, copies of score
books and statistics may be included to help substantiate the
accomplishments and contributions of the nominee. These materials should
focus on high school accomplishments and contributions and be listed in
chronological order.
c. A 5x7 photograph, preferably black and white, should be submitted with
nomination form.
