JOB DESCRIPTION Course Coordinator-Staff Development Facilitator Gastroenterology Service Clinical Nurse Manager 2 Grade Emergency Department / Medical Specialty Directorate MATER MISERICORDIAE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL JOB DESCRIPTION 1. JOB PURPOSE The Course Co Coordinator-Clinical Facilitator will endeavour to enhance clinical practice by supporting qualified nurses in the delivery of patient care. Goals include: Contribute to up-skilling of nurses in the care of patients requiring G.I. endoscopy nursing care Continuous quality improvements in standards of patient care through development of professional expertise. Contribute to the on-going development and review of gastroenterology services in the hospital. Development of Professional Practice underpinned by the Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework (An Bord Altranais 2000). To provide a quality continuous educational and supportive service to all staff partaking in the Continuous Professional Development Programme in Gastroenterology Nursing. 2. Educational Responsibilities Develop innovative learning opportunities based on present and future needs analysis. Promote a supportive clinical learning environment. Ensure that the gastroenterology nursing course will provide skilled competent nursing staff in accordance with the guidelines of the Department of Nursing Studies and Nursing Midwifery Board of Ireland Organise study days, timetables, lectures, lecture venues and equipment. Orientate new staff to the speciality. Identify learning needs of students to meet defined objectives and in collaboration with the Link Tutor and Course Leader and Directorate Nurse Manager. Prepare and deliver lectures, teaching sessions, tutorials in all aspects of gastroenterology nursing. Monitor, assess, enhance and evaluate the quality of care provided by the course students. Evaluate modules, lectures, student proficiency and satisfaction at regular intervals. Assist staff in identifying objectives of care. Encourage utilization of learning resources. Devise, co-ordinate and maintain a record of on-going formal and informal education sessions. Work in conjunction with CNM’s to monitor, assess and evaluate the quality of nursing care. Be a role-model for best practice and serve as a resource person to staff. Responsible for maintaining own professional competence. Keep up-to-date with current research and disseminate findings among nursing staff to ensure evidence-based practice and research utilisation. Carry out clinical audits and research activity for quality assurance both internal and external JOB DESCRIPTION 3. Clinical Responsibilities Demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge of gastroenterology nursing and provide clinical leadership. Support nursing staff in the on-going provision of optimal care for gastroenterology patients. Promote quality care through the creation and revision of nursing policies, procedures and protocols using evidence based practice. Facilitate professional development in GI Nursing by working alongside nursing staff in the clinical practice environment across the gastrointestinal service. Promote understanding of the health, social and economic implications of gastrointestinal disease. Ensure evidence based practice and research findings are utilised in the clinical environment. 4. Managerial Responsibilities 5. Work in unison with line managers to effect improvements in service provision. Demonstrate managerial and leadership competence. Promote good working relationships with staff across the G.I. service and promote seamless care. Encourage staff endeavours to enhance patient care. Support and develop the philosophy of gastroenterology nursing. Audit nursing practice and evaluate where improvements can be effected. Provide relief cover for CNM’s as requested by Directorate Nurse Manager/ CNM3. Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings across the gastrointestinal service. Attend hospital committee meetings as requested. Professional Self-Development Responsibilities Demonstrate a high level of interest in the clinical management of gastroenterology care. Engage in personal development planning and continuous professional education. Contribute to intra-G.I., departmental, divisional and other meetings. Engage in other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned from time to time by the Hospital Authority through the Director of Nursing, Directorate Nurse Manager / CNM3.
