Current Events And the Oscar Goes To By Matt Mann The Oscars were on Sunday, February 22, 2015. It was a ceremony for American Awards in the film industry. The host was Neil Patrick Harris. It was the 87th Academy Award. I didn’t watch the awards but I like to know who wins. Before the show, the actors walk on the red carpet. The guys wear tuxedos and the women wear gowns. Some people come in limos. The show takes place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. I wanted the movie American Sniper to win Best Picture award because it was good when I saw it. A good performance was Lady Gaga. She sang songs from The Sound of Music. Jack Black made a special appearance in the show. The finale was Birdman winning Best Picture. It was a great show!! The Mayoral Fight By Dan Cohen The Mayoral election is big news in Chicago. This is the first time in the city, possibly state history, which a mayoral race has gone into a runoff. The race between incumbent mayor Rahm Emanuel and commissioner, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. He was previously an Illinois Senator and member of the Chicago City Council. The two are running under the Democratic Party. I along with others, believe May. Emanuel will win in the end. To the best of my knowledge, polls will open on April 7th, 2015. Sports Believe in the Center of the United By Sean Waterbury Despite the injuries to Patrick Kane for the Blackhawks and Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, and Taj Gibson for the Bulls, there are many reasons to keep believing in our teams playing in the United Center. They both are still great threats and can make deep runs into the playoffs in their respected leagues. They can even make runs into their championship series like the Stanley Cup or the NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals. So here is why to believe in them like I do. For the Bulls, they have a deep rotation of really solid players like Joakim Noah, Pau Gasol, Nikola Mirotic, Tony Snell, Mike Dunleavy, Aaron Brooks, E’twaun Moore, Doug McDermott, and so on that should keep this team thick in the race behind Toronto Raptors for the second seed in the east and should keep them above water heading toward the playoffs. They have a great coach in Tom Thibodeau, who has several years of experience in the league and playoffs despite not having won it all. Also Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler, and Taj Gibson should return from their injuries by time the playoffs start, which could mean the Bulls will be deeper and stronger than before. Finally, they are balanced offensively and defensively, which could lead them deep into the playoffs. Beware of the Bulls!! For the Blackhawks, they are strong and deep team with several determined lines full of playoff experience. They are one of the best defensive teams in the league except of the last few weeks where it has been a little rough. Da Hawks have one of the best power play kill units in the league which is good for a recipe to go deep into the playoffs like they have years before, In addition, they have traded and added several players at the trade deadline which just passed. Those moves can also keep a Stanley Cup playoff run alive. Also with lots of playoff experience on the roster and an exceptional coach in Joel Quenneville, the Hawks shouldn’t be counted out just yet. Plus, if they do get to the Stanley Cup finals, Patrick Kane could be back on the ice! Remember they have won it all before and recently in 2010 and 2013. Captain Johnathan Toews and company will keep on fighting till the end. Be warned, Da Hawks are coming to end your run in the playoffs! Overall, don’t count out our teams just yet. There are still a lot of games to be played and when it all settles down, they will have the same chance as any other team in playoff position when the postseason starts. Remember, you win and lose as a team, but you don’t depend on a single player to guide you to the promise land. Bring it all on the ice and the court. I believe until the very bitter end! So watch out and don’t be surprised when our teams are on the brink of winning it all! Breaking the Curse By Jason Kaplan I hope that the Cubs have a good season and they make the playoffs as well. I like the Cubs and I think they’re a pretty neat team to watch either on TV or going to the games and cheering them on. They play at Wrigley. At the ball park you can order food there like hot dogs, beverages, and nachos too while you’re watching the game. Their opening day is usually in April and lasts for about 5 months or so. Their opening day is on April 5th and their season ends on October 4th, which is their very last game of the year. The Cubs won their first series in 19071908. They were the world champion’s 2 years in a row that’s really good for them I hope they keep it up so they can win again for a third or fourth time. Who knows, maybe they’ll be famous and still be champions? So think that’s all I have for now. Go Cubs! Let the Madness Begin By Chip Saavedra This is the sports news. I’m talking about March Madness. I hope they have a good season. Sometimes I play basketball on Fridays. March madness is like having a good team with good players. Good players pass the ball. The bracket is kind of like your favorite teams and if they win. If they win they go to the tournament, the next round. Sports center is the broadcast where you can watch your favorite teams play basketball.
