Final Minutes
Imagine South Lake Charter School
Board of Directors Town Hall Meeting
November 21, 2013
Call to Order: Robert called the meeting to order at 6:07 pm.
Ground Rules: Robert discussed the ground rules as stated in the agenda, as well as volunteer hours
for parents in attendance.
Board Member Introductions: Robert Wozniak (Board of Directors), Vertis Lane (Secretary), Bill
Decker (Board Member), and Heather Bacon (Board Member).
Imagine South Lake Staff Introductions: Mary Briggs (principal) announced the presence of many
teachers and staff members, including Kathleen Dial (Academic Coach) and Jennifer Osborne (Dean
of Students).
Past Year's Successes: Robert discussed the successes as stated on the agenda, including new board
members: Bill Decker and Heather Bacon. He also encouraged the parents to visit the website and
review the minutes of the Board meetings.
Value of Education and Learning Instruction- Vertis explained that every item on the agenda is
reflective in the minutes. She explained the RTI position (Sherry Anderson) that was created this year
and commends Kathleen Dial for all of her work on the curriculum and her help with the teachers
and students.
Principal's Report- Mary also discussed the help we have from Ms. Dial and Ms. Anderson, the team
collaboration happening on campus this year, and our vision and non-negotiable guidelines. Mary
and Kathleen presented a PowerPoint presentation. It included a data analysis of the school through
surveys taken by parents, students, and staff. They showed the school grows (areas of needed
improvement) and glows (areas where improvement has been met). They discussed "Joy at Work"
and how most of the decision-making happens from teachers and parents through task forces and
committees, our six Measures of Excellence, and a movie presentation on the Academic Framework.
Hear the Audience Who is in charge of keeping the school clean? The hallways are stained and dark, landscaping is
dying, and fences are falling down. They are not good impressions. Board Response- Some of
these things need funding. We are looking into and addressing issues as money allows.
 I want to learn more about curriculum selection, specifically math. Is there are a committee of
stakeholders that decides next year's math curriculum? As a parent and a teacher, I am not
happy with this year's Engage New York. Board's Response- Textbook adoption begins at the
state level. The District gets a list and does a textbook assessment, and then a list goes to the
school that has stakeholders who choose. Dial's response- Since Florida is still tweaking
standards, anything we purchase now may not be relevant next year and so it is open this year
to what we choose. Engage New York is very closely tied to Common Core and is an online,
digital textbook we call Eureka. You may contact Mrs. Briggs if you are interested in helping with
this.
 Can we add cursive writing to the curriculum?
Board's Response- Cursive is on its way out of the curriculum because of digital and printed text
communication. Limited time for instruction is provided in the curriculum with the exception of
the very basics.
 How long do we have to suffer through Common Core, specifically the grading system?
Board's Response- You will have to contact the Florida State Board of Education on that. We

have to teach the standards as determined by the state for our students to be prepared for the
measurements of mastery they are expected to achieve. You may write letters to the Florida
State Legislature and express your thoughts and feelings. Dial's Response- We chose to align the
standards with our grading system. It is the direction that many counties are moving toward
because of the need to transfer letter grades into comparable mastery levels.
Can we have different tracks for various academic levels?
Dial's Response- In Middle School students do have advanced and remedial strand classes.
Elementary students are grouped within the classroom for appropriate ability-level instruction
which reflects advanced, regular and remedial strands.
We need a day custodian to monitor the bathroom cleanliness. The condition of the bathrooms
has always been an issue for the six years we have been going to Imagine. From the locks to the
doors breaking, to the doors being loose, to the overall cleanliness of the bathrooms. Bathrooms
are a breeding ground for germs.
Board's Response- This summer ISL hired a day time custodian to clean during the day. Principal
Briggs will review the monitoring of the bathrooms with the custodian to provide increased
frequent checks as possible. There are many other duties the one custodian must provide during
the school day.
How are substitute teachers chosen?
Principal Briggs Response - They usually are retired teachers, people who don't work full time, or
parents of students at the school. The pool is different from Lake County's, but they still have to
go through the same process.
Suggestions to Discuss with South Lake Imagine Administrators and Staff as written on individual
issues sheets:
 The students need to have stricter discipline. They are loud, disrespectful, sloppy, and are not
held accountable for their actions or appearance. Board will review with staff.
 It is apparent that there are several students who do not reside in Lake County that attend this
school. How is this possible?
Mary's Response- Students do have to live in Lake County and must show proof of residency as
required by the county in order to be enrolled. Students of staff at ISL may attend with the staff
member even if they live out of county. This is common practice as a courtesy to our staff
members. She will review registers to assure all students are in-county. None are known.
 The dress code for students needs to be enforced. Shirts are stained and not tucked in, shorts
are too large, and shoes are not dress code. Teachers also should dress more professionally.
Board will discuss with staff.
 Why do only K-3 teachers only have a library cart? Dial's Response- It is a teacher choice to visit
the library or have books delivered on carts. It depends on what fits with their curriculum.
 Instead of all the teacher and volunteer lunches, dinners, etc., the students need to be more of
the focus and not only recognized when they are fundraising.
Principal Briggs’ Response - We celebrates Terrific Kid, Science Fair, History Fair, Spelling Bee
winners, etc. The staff is considering more ways to recognize student achievements.

It would be so nice if the committees/groups could coordinate their email communications
(non-emergency) and send one email with all of the messages and reminders for the week.
Mary's Response- The office staff has no way to address emails differently since they are sent
directly from the individual senders. We will discuss this with staff for possibilities.
When I volunteer in the lunch room I notice that not all volunteers wear gloves when touching
the children's food. Working in the health field and knowing about diseases, I think everyone
should.
Board's Response- We agree and will make sure gloves are available. Consider it done.
Second grade performed Common Core songs coordinated by the music teacher, Melody Guider.
Adjournment – Robert adjourned the meeting at 7:15 p.m.
