Affandi
“ I want to die in simplicity without a giving anyone unnecessary trouble, so I could go home
to him in Peace” (Affandi).
Artists are important in our life because they can inspire and entertain us through their
work. There are many kind of artists, such as presenter, actors, painters, musicians, etc.
Societies influenced by artist can inspire people. One of the famous like Affandi, he inspire
people with his painting. Affandi was a famous painter in the world. Affandi has different
techniques than others for painting. Why Affandi was important? Because of his life, work,
and his impact.
Affandi was a kind person who wanted to have a peaceful life. He didn’t want to make
a trouble with anyone. Affandi was a painter in Indonesia, who was born in 1907 Cirebon,
West Java. Affandi was the son of a local sugar factory surveyor. In his life, he married with
Maryati, when Maryati was 16 years old and Affandi was 26 years old in 1933. After 1 year
later, they had 1 daughter, named Kartika. Affandi’s talent was shared by Kartika. Actually
Affandi was known as wearing a white t-shirt, a sarong, and smoking a pipe. By the time of
his death, he had created 2000 paintings.
Affandi has different techniques for painting. Potret Diri was Affandi’s painting that
the paint was like taken from the camera. In his painting, he always expresses his emotion in
there. Not only painting was like a picture that taken from the camera, but also Affandi can
use his fingers and hands to attract importance for on the canvas. He used some materials to
paint, such as oil in canvas, sketch on paper, watercolor on paper and some more. Many
artists also use the same materials as well, but Affandi use it in a different way, his technique

is different which make his paint looks better then other painters. Actually, Affandi’s first job
was a teacher and at the same time he worked as tickets collector at a movie theatre in
Bandung, around 1930s Affandi joined the Kelompok Lima Bandung with Hendra Gunawan,
Barli, Sudarso, and Wandi. This group influenced Indonesian modern art. Affandi held his
solo exhibition in Building Djakarta in 1943, and decided to move to Jakarta in 1948. He
became one of the pioneers Indonesia painters.
Affandi could be called as “towering figure in the history of Indonesian modern art”

he also made Indonesia known by the world. Affandi also cares about poverty in Indonesia to
through his painting. In his painting, he draw from what he feels, he really shows that he cares
for his environment. Affandi got a scholarship from the Indian government to join in Art
School and live in India for 2 years. The Indonesian government appointed Affandi to follow
International exhibition. “Thus Affandi was well – known in the world because he won 3
prizes in Brazil (1952), Venice (1954), and Sao Paulo (1956)”

for the painters, especially to young people to be successful and become a painter who is
known by the whole world. He impact the youth generations, he become the motivation for
the youth to succeed in art, since Affandi is an international artist many people around the
world know Indonesia and he is one of the hero.
This painter was significant in Indonesia through his life, painting career, and his
artwork influence on other artists. Affandi was known as having a unique and simple of
dressing. He could make a different technique than others painters. He would draw what he
felt at that moment. Affandi made Indonesia became well known in the world with his work.
