Introducing Google Apps and Microsoft 365 for Education
Dear Parents/Carers
Florey Primary School is committed to providing a rich learning environment for our students. We believe the use of
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is fundamental in assisting teaching and learning in all areas of the
school curriculum.
Florey Primary School will be adopting the new cloud services provided by the Education and Training Directorate.
This new platform is Google Apps for Education. This new approach will enable our students with more opportunities
to collaborate with each other and to effectively engage with the information technology component of the Australian
Curriculum. Our students are growing up in an information technology world and the vision of Florey Primary School
is to move with our students to provide opportunities to enhance this model of learning. We believe this shift in our
learning model will deepen our students’ engagement with the curriculum and in-turn improve learning
opportunities within the classrooms at Florey Primary School.
Google Apps for Education provides parents and families with new insight into classroom learning and an
opportunity to provide real-time feedback to students. As such, it helps to strengthen home-school partnerships and
build a sense of classroom community through the use of blogs, online parent communities, and the sharing of
student learning experiences. Google Apps for Education will also provide new student email services. This email
service is hosted on our SchoolsNET domain, enabling better security and oversight.
As Google Apps for Education require some personal information about students, which will be stored in a location
outside of the Education and Training Directorate, we seek your consent to provide access for your child. The Google
Apps for Education Student Privacy Information attached provides information on any student data that may be
collected by these services and how the data is stored, used and deleted.
The following guidelines have been established to guide student, educator and family use of Google Apps for
Education:
 Students’ first names MAY be published within the Florey Primary School and ACT ETD Google communities.
 Students’ surnames, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth and other personal
information WILL NOT be published.
 Parents/carers who leave comments are asked to use their first name only so as not to identify their child, eg.
“Jane – Sally’s mum” rather than “Jane Brown – Sally’s mum”.
 Photographs of students MAY be published within the Florey Primary School and ACT ETD Google
communities.
Staff at Florey Primary School are currently undertaking training in Google Apps for Educations and the school is
investing money into the purchasing of chrome books that will facilitate this new approach to ICT in schools. A
student leadership group has been formed and we will soon be offering opportunities for parents to become a part of
the Google Apps steering committee at Florey Primary. If any parents are interested in being part of this committee,
please email me at Bernadette.Allen@ed.act.edu.au. Our vision is to have our senior students actively engaged in this
new approach by the end of term 3.
To enable this to happen we do require parental permission for your child/ren to participate in these learning
opportunities. We ask you to read, sign and return the attached form to the front office by 10 June 2015.
