Collin Turner GEOG 1700- Natural Hazards October 4, 2013 Prof. Cindy Clark Weekly Weather Information On September 28th the day began with cold temperatures about 48°F when I woke up at 8:00am, which was the low for the day. The temperature reached 68°F high for the day in the afternoon around 3:00pm. Wind chill did play a factor in creating the cooler temperatures, with a high of around 18mph winds, in the mid-day. There was a consistent breeze throughout the entire day. The humidity was around 30% for most the day, but got as high as 70% in the early morning hours. It felt as though this cold weather was going to staying with Salt Lake City for the rest of the year to come. It was partly cloudy throughout the day. The next day of September 29th began with much more comfortable and warmer temperatures with a high of 73°F and a low of 54°F, the low was in the early morning hours however. The clouds covered most of the sky and even reached overcast towards the late afternoon hours (3:00-6:00pm.) There were high winds for most of the morning and into early afternoon hours, reaching a high of 27mph around 11:00am, and remained fairly windy for the entire day. For the afternoon and evening it was not very humid, staying around the 20% range for those hours. It felt as though a storm was brewing from the cloud cover. September 30th’s morning was a warm welcome, literally. From around 8:00-10:00am the temperature was hovering in the mid to low 70’s. The afternoon was a very warm 80°F for most the afternoon until sundown. At which point, the evening temperature dropped to similar temperatures as the morning. It was partly cloudy for most of the day, until it cleared up in the late evening. It was not too windy for the greater portion of the day, but did reach about 20mph around 10:00am. It felt really dry all through the day, but the humidity picked up as the clouds cleared at night. Not too bad for a Monday I suppose. The first day of October started with comfortable temperatures in the late end of the 60’s. The temperature reached a high of 77°F in the midafternoon and a low of 50°F in the early morning hours. The morning started clear but as the day progressed clouds began to slowly fill the sky. The wind was calm for the entire day. The humidity was ever presence on this day, and ranged anywhere from about 30% all the way up to 70%. All in all, it was just a typical way to begin October. On October 2nd, the morning was a bit chiller, with high 50’s temperatures. Throughout the day it never got warmer than 65°F. Dark clouds partially covered the sky, for most of the day. And at two separate points of the day it rained lightly, a bad omen if you ask me. It was fairly humid for the entire day ranging from 40-65%. Wind speed varied most the day in between the low to high teens. As much as I enjoy the cold rain, it really only means snow is in the future. October 3rd’s morning brought the warmest temperatures of the day with a high of 54°F, which is always a bad start. It was cloudy all morning and afternoon, with light rain in the afternoon. Then in the late evening, the harsh and cold rain poured down on the city of Salt Lake, there were evening bits of snow to top it all off. It was frightening considering I was driving home as it came down, and snow is no fun to slip and slide through, unless of course you’re into a dangerous lifestyle. The winds remained in the mid-teens for all of the day. Humidity was around 50% for the day, until the snow hit, which increased it to about 80%. Not an ideal way to get through a Thursday night Utah Utes game. And finally, Friday October 4th greeted me well because the only sign of snow in the forecast was the chilly temperatures throughout the day. However, the high was only 50°F with a low of 37°F during the early morning snowfall. From late morning to evening it was partly to mostly cloudy. Winds were much calmer than from previous days never reaching above 10mph, which was nice because it was already so damn cold. The humidity was fairly consistence most of this day too, ranging from 43-66%. I can deal with cold, but it’s the wet snow that drives me insane, I really hope that this winter is dry for driving purposes. If that were the case, it would be a very dirty air season, but it’s always that case here in Salt Lake City.
