CITY OF ____________ RESOLUTION _______ Commitment to Eliminate Coal Tar Sealcoat Use WHEREAS, Scientific studies confirm that coal tar sealcoats present a significant health risk to the public. WHEREAS, Coal tar sealcoats contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of which are suspected or known carcinogens. WHEREAS The routine wear and tear of coal tar sealcoated pavements produces dust and particles contaminated with PAHs that can be breathed and accidentally ingested by people living by the pavements, increasing cancer risk significantly. WHEREAS, PAHs from coal tar sealcoated pavements have been found to run off into nearby waterways, endangering aquatic life and contaminating sediments, which adds to the expense of pollution cleanup. WHEREAS, Asphalt based sealcoats are safer, readily available, and very affordable. NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED That the __________ City Council does hereby commit to eliminate the use of coal tar sealcoats on city owned properties.
