Statement from new Chair of Allfie, Navin Kikabhai It is with great delight that I have been appointed the role of Chairperson with the Alliance for Inclusive Education. For me, this has been a personal aspiration come true. This role, in part, has come at an interesting political time, when there is a reluctance to fully embrace a social justice agenda that would bring about the equalisation of disabled people's rights. I am acutely aware of the importance of education, at every level, and the role this has in shaping our expectations, aspirations, future life experiences, social networks, and for us to shape our own identities. In this sense education can be a game changer. Unfortunately, I am also well aware that to segregate disabled young people based upon their personal characteristics is a human rights violation of epic proportion, that society is barely awakening. Working with ALLFIE staff will come with a huge responsibility and an important opportunity to come face-to-face with immense challenges and opportunities. I know I will embrace working with a committed and dedicated group of staff who work tirelessly to bring about the realisation of an Inclusive Education system. Over many years ALLFIE have been central in transforming attitudes, disseminating knowledge and understanding, and are working with multiple individuals and groups from disabled people, families, educational staff, local authority staff, national and international groups, officials to individuals in public office. The role as Chairperson also comes at a time of celebration. ALLFIE later this year will be marking its 25th year, and collectively, I have no doubt, we will have an opportunity to reflect on our experiences and traverse along memory lane. What a year to be with ALLFIE and as Chairperson! Yours sincerely, Navin Kikabhai
