NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RESEARCH
SENIOR MACROECONOMIST: MACROECONOMIC MODELLING AND
FORECASTING TEAM
The National Institute of Economic and Social Research is Britain’s longest
established independent economic research institute. It specialises in applied
research, combining high academic standards with relevance to policy
making. Further information is available at www.niesr.ac.uk
NIESR is currently looking to recruit an experienced macroeconomist to join
its Macroeconomic Modelling and Forecasting team. The team provides a
large-scale global econometric model (NiGEM) to users in the policy
community, including international bodies such as the IMF and OECD as well
as central banks and finance ministries across the world. NiGEM is an
estimated, theoretically coherent forward-looking model, designed as a tool for
both practical forecasting and for high quality academic research and policy
analysis.
The successful candidate will play a key role in producing forecasts using
NiGEM. They will have responsibility for all stages of NIESR’s forecast for a
set of countries. This includes maintenance of country models, forecasting
judgements and assumptions and communicating the forecasts through the
National Institute Economic Review (NIER). The post holder will also be
responsible for drafting and editing sections of the World Economy chapter of
each NIER and will be expected to provide some intellectual guidance to
colleagues. The post holder is expected to present the latest forecasts to the
media, NiGEM subscribers and corporate members, as well as interacting
with the external NiGEM user group and to participate in regular discussions
held with national and international policymaking organisations, such as the
OBR, IMF, OECD, ECB and EU Commission. The team is actively engaged
with several international forecasting networks, including the AIECE,
Euroframe and the UN’s Project LINK, in which the successful candidate is
expected to participate. The post holder is also expected to develop
relationships with existing subscribers via NiGEM’s in-house training sessions
and master classes, and proactively promote NiGEM to potential new
subscribers. Some of the work is based around our quarterly forecast and
publication dates, and so a willingness to work flexibly and over extended
hours is required.
A brief assessment will be required as part of the interview process.
