Labour Market Outcomes and Mental
Health in Ireland: An Empirical Analysis
Project Description (max 300 words)
The research project will contain three separate empirical pieces of work, each
focused upon mental health and the labour market in Ireland and
each using three separate econometric methodologies. The data set to be used will
come from the Living in Ireland Survey (LII), which is freely available, and will
allow for a panel of labour market data to be constructed. The first study will
focus
on the impact of being unemployed on the mental health of an individual (as
measured by the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ--‐ 12) contained within the
LII). An ordered probit model will be applied to the LII panel data set. Analysis
will focus on the standard socioeconomic factors as well as the mental
health/unemployment aspect of the study. The research objective of the second
study is examine how the mental health of an individual impacts upon their
earnings. A Mincerian wage equation will be estimated with a random effects
estimator. An Oaxaca decomposition will also be applied to investigate the
potential for wage discrimination against workers with mental health problems. Th
e final research piece will utilise a multinomial logit model to ascertain the links
between the occupational attainment of an individual and their mental health.
The research objectives of the project is to examine how the mental health of ind
ividuals in the Irish labour market: 1) is affected by being unemployed; 2) impact
s upon the rate of hourly pay which they receive and if they experience wage b
ased discrimination as a consequence of their mental health and; 3) contributes t
owards the occupation which they have selected.
