POSITION DUTIES:
As a the Outreach coordinator assigned to the Southwest Biological
Science
Center (SBSC) you will be responsible for developing and implementing
a
comprehensive public and internal outreach program for the Center.
Some of
your specific duties will include:
- Internal Communications: Notifying SBSC scientists and managers of
news
articles of interest. Coordinating news releases and SBSC
congressional
contacts with representatives of the Office of Communications.
Establishing
procedures and processes for developing and coordinating outreach
activities. Reviewing and editing selected science products.
Preparing an
annual communication plan and accomplishments summary.
- Legislative Liaison: Monitoring Congressional Quarterly or similar
congressional news outlets, natural-resource-related legislation, and
natural resource related news releases and forwarding relevant items
to
staff as appropriate. Assisting staff with legislative briefings and
documents. Maintaining contacts with local Congressional offices.
- Website Development and Publishing: Serving as the creative and
policy
lead for the public and internal SBSC web site. Developing and
overseeing
web content and design. Coordinating all external web work with the
web
master, publication and IT specialists to ensure that technical and
design
goals are met. Providing expert advice and guidance on the use of
multiple
forms of visual media output.
- Media Relations: Assisting with writing draft news releases and
editing
informational materials drafted by SBSC staff. Coordinating media
interviews with subject matter experts and arranging photographic and
electronic media coverage of SBSC events. Acting as a liaison with
representatives of newspapers, magazines, and other news media for
conferences, meetings, open houses, and other functions as
appropriate.
Representing USGS at selected meetings, conferences, open houses,
career
fairs, and other events.
- Public Information: Assisting with the production and distribution
of
publications to stakeholders and the general public, and in
responding to
information inquiries. Writing and distributing outreach material
such as
fact sheets and web content. Handling requests for publications,
images,
multimedia resources and other materials from employees, partners and
the
public. Responding to FOIA requests.
ABOUT THE SOUTHWEST BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE CENTER (SBSC):
As a unit of the USGS, the mission of the Southwest Biological
Science
Center (SBSC) is to provide quality scientific information needed to
conserve and manage natural and biological resources, with an
emphasis on
the species and ecosystems of the southwestern United States.
· Specifically, SBSC's goals include the following:
o Evaluate responses of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to
natural and anthropogenic influences;
o Develop the biological knowledge needed to sustain and
restore
ecosystems;
o Develop tools for assessing status and trends of animal and
plant populations;
o Use integrated, long-term research to model linkages among
ecosystem components;
o Provide a scientific foundation for federal policies and
management strategies related to natural resources in the
arid
southwest; and
o Disseminate the latest in technical information and
research
findings in a timely manner to client agencies,
conservation
organizations, and others responsible for the management
of our
Nation's natural resources.
Research Stations
Four Research Stations comprise the core of the SBSC. These stations
include the Canyonlands Research Station, the Colorado Plateau
Research
Station, the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center, and the
Sonoran
Desert Research Station.
