Welcome to Racine’s Adopt-A-River
Program. To protect you while you’re on the work site, the Parks, Recreation, And
Cultural Services Department has designed safety guidelines, which should be reviewed before each cleanup session to help assure a SAFE CLEANUP.
Be very careful out there.
Be mentally alert.
Be in good physical shape.
Don’t horse around on the worksite.
Work as a team.
Always work in daylight and in good weather .
Wear hiking boots or shoes with thick soles to prevent foot damage from sharp objects.
Wear work gloves for safety.
Protect yourself from ticks in the grass. Tuck your pant legs into your socks/boots. Check your body for ticks as soon as possible when you get home.
If you are sensitive to the sun, bring along a baseball cap or wide-brimmed hat, a long sleeved shirt and sunscreen lotion.
Leave your headset stereo/radio at home.
Park only in designated park department lots or on city streets.
Do not touch anything hazardous or that you cannot identify. For example, avoid car batteries, medical waste/hypodermic needles, sharp or heavy items, dead animals or chemicals that are often in closed containers.
Note these hazardous items on your group cleanup report postcard. If these items seem immediately dangerous or illegal, notify the parks department as soon as possible.

Review the safety rules with all workers before cleaning your river segment.
Organize your workers into crews.
Always have an adult supervisor (crew chief) for each 5 or 6 workers.
Have the crew chief be the safety
“watchdog” to monitor the cleanup and advice workers of potential hazards.
Be prepared with a first aid kit.
Know where the nearest hospital / emergency room is located and the best route to reach it, before you begin work.
Know where the nearest telephone and/or cell phone is located if you should need help.
Know the physical condition and special needs of your crew.
Have an adequate supply of trash bags.
Never work on bridges, overpasses, steep ground, or in tunnels.
Stay away from mowing or construction operations.
Stay off parked equipment.
Stay alert for snakes, poison ivy and stinging insects.
Avoid overexertion.
Bring lots of water to drink while you work, especially on hot, humid days.
Do not permit alcoholic beverages on the site.
Avoid substances that cause allergic reactions.
Always work facing any traffic . to pack more in. Begin a new bag instead.
Place filled trash bags in a group, at your designated collection site (marked on your map).
Bag glass separately in a paper bag and then put the bag in the larger plastic litter bag.
If you choose you may take recyclables to a recycling center and retain or donate to a local charity any cash from the sale of these items.
At the end of your cleanup please complete and mail your post-cleanup report card.
