“COMMITMENT 101”

Proverbs 16:3 “ Commit your activities to the Lord and your plans will be achieved ”

“Commitment” is a big buzzword in sports today. Coaches are asking for commitment, players want to be committed, and schools are looking for commitments form both players and coaches. But the true meaning of the word is often blurred or applied only to a few situations. For instance, how many students are as committed to their academics and families as they are to their athletic lives?

When it comes to commitment, Jesus Christ wants us to be committed as well. He desires our commitment to Him each day. Unfortunately many of us can ’t remember the last time we said , “Lord, I am committing this to You.

” Yet as the above verse reminds us when we do commit our work to the

Lord , our plans will be fulfilled. It does not guarantee that we will win, but that what we commit to God will be achieved.

It is hard to remember to do this. Committing everything to the Lord is a moment-to-moment adventure.

It cannot be a “one and done” type deal. Everything we do needs to be committed to Him. Why?

Because He gave ALL He had for us! 100%. When we see how much God did for us through His Son

Jesus Christ we can ’t help but want to be committed to Him.

WRAP UP: “ COMMITMENT 101 ”

 What keeps you from being committed 100% to Jesus?

 What encourages you to press on with a daily commitment?

 “It does not guarantee that we will win, but that what we commit to God will be achieved”.

What does this mean to you?

How does this concept of COMMITMENT fit into the idea of being a 3 Dimensional athlete?

The Greatest 360 in History

Mark 15:25-37

“It was the third hour, and they crucified him... at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice...” Mark 15:25, 37

One of the most dramatic, athletic, and thrilling plays in basketball is a breakaway 360 slam dunk.

A 360 dunk means that the player leaves his feet while facing the basket, goes high into the air, and rotates his body a full 360 degrees or one complete revolution before slamming the ball home. Many players have mastered this move, and fans will debate which athlete has been the best at the 360. When I asked my players at open gym one night about the greatest 360 dunk they had seen, one young man named James said without hesitation, “Vince Carter at the All-Star game [Toronto, 2000].” Still others mentioned Kobe Bryant. And from a generation ago, I told them about Dominique Wilkins, the Atlanta Hawks star who was nicknamed the human highlight film because of his spectacular dunks and aerial maneuvers. Whoever executes a 360 dunk causes the fans to go crazy and spill their popcorn in celebration.

After I asked our players who the greatest 360 dunker was, I asked them to tell me the greatest

360 in history —not just in basketball or in sports, but in history. None of them followed me, so I read them two verses from the book of Mark. The first verse said simply that Jesus Christ was crucified at nine in the morning. The second verse stated that the skies turned black from noon to

3:00 p.m., at which time Jesus declared, “It is finished,” and gave up his spirit. Jesus hung on the cross for you and me from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Let ’s do the math. Six hours times sixty minutes per hour is 360 minutes. The greatest 360 in history is because of what the cross and the demonstration of love meant for mankind. Jesus didn’t just drink from the cup. He drained it and tasted every drop of sin that will ever be committed. As if to make a point, because prophetically he could have come down well before then, he hung and hung and hung to show Satan, “Who’s your daddy now?” Jesus showed his amazing love for us by continuing to pull himself up to draw one more breath, raking his torn and bleeding

back against the splinters on the cross for

360 minutes, the greatest 360 there ever was, is, and is to come.

Prayer: Dear Jesus Christ, what an incredible gift of love you gave me when you hung a

360 on the rugged cross for me. In Jesus’s name, amen.

CAN WE BE THAT COMMITTED???

(Yet at times we give up so easily?) WHY???
