EAL11G Title of Lesson: Weather Forecasts Zabowski Course: EAL11G Grades 9 - 12 Overview and Objectives Lesson Flow The students will … Learn weather related vocabulary, assess the value of web sources, create their own weather forecast using computer based media and build their skills and competencies in oral communication and presentation (voice, tone, speed, pitch, body language and eye contact) Day 1 Background information for the teacher: ***Although lesson flow is broken down into days, students work at their own pace and may be ahead or behind of the actual schedule – that’s okay! The ultimate goal is to be finished and ready to film in a week’s time, students who finish “early” can spend class time practicing their script and/or turning their background display from “good to great” – add transitions, different images, zoom in/out, etc.*** Materials and Resources Computers and internet access http://voice.adobe.com/v/RoRzvhNvt3c Video camera or other device to film Projector screen Vocabulary Weather - forecast Sky Temperature – high, low Celsius Wind (speed) Sunny (Partly) Cloudy Overcast Precipitation – rain, snow, sleet, mist, hail Storm – thunderstorm, rain, snow, blizzard, Students will watch (at their own pace) the video http://voice.adobe.com/v/RoRzvhNvt3c Once they have finished viewing and understand the concepts they will need to be directed to CTV Winnipeg website to view the last couple of skywatch videos online. Provide students with handout “Weather Forecast Student Instructions”. Have them choose a location in which they would like to report the weather on. Day 2 Research weather in chosen location. Discuss how students can ensure their information source is reliable .com, .ca, .gov are good indicators also it doesn’t hurt (AND THEY SHOULD) view weather information from three different sources to ensure accuracy of content – don’t just trust information from the first website they find!! Handout script template and fill in Day 3 Continue working on script and start creating background presentation – must be a minimum of 5 different “slides” – one for each section of forecast Day 4 – 5 Final touches of background display, rehearsal – discuss oral presentation techniques (voice, tone, speed, body language, eye contact) Day 6 Film each student’s presentation Summary and closure: 1.
