Title of Lesson: Weather Forecasts
Zabowski
Course: EAL11G Grades 9 - 12
Overview and Objectives
Lesson Flow
The students will …
Learn weather related vocabulary, assess the value of
web sources, create their own weather forecast using
computer based media and build their skills and
competencies in oral communication and
presentation (voice, tone, speed, pitch, body
language and eye contact)
Day 1
Background information for the teacher:
***Although lesson flow is broken down into days,
students work at their own pace and may be ahead or
behind of the actual schedule – that’s okay! The
ultimate goal is to be finished and ready to film in a
week’s time, students who finish “early” can spend
class time practicing their script and/or turning their
background display from “good to great” – add
transitions, different images, zoom in/out, etc.***

last couple of skywatch videos online.
Provide students with handout “Weather Forecast Student
Instructions”. Have them choose a location in which they
would like to report the weather on.
Day 2
Research weather in chosen location. Discuss how
students can ensure their information source is reliable .com, .ca, .gov are good indicators also it doesn’t hurt
(AND THEY SHOULD) view weather information from three
different sources to ensure accuracy of content – don’t
just trust information from the first website they find!!
Handout script template and fill in
Day 3
Continue working on script and start creating background
presentation – must be a minimum of 5 different “slides” –
one for each section of forecast
Day 4 – 5
Final touches of background display, rehearsal – discuss
oral presentation techniques (voice, tone, speed, body
language, eye contact)
Day 6
Film each student’s presentation
Summary and closure:
1. Did students show understanding of the vocabulary and concepts during oral discussions?
2. Did students follow the steps to create final assessment?
3. Did students follow through and present their forecast focusing on oral presentation skills?

Weather Forecast Assignment
Student Instructions
After viewing http://voice.adobe.com/v/RoRzvhNvt3c you will follow the
instructions to create your own weather forecast video
1. Location – choose a place (city or town) to report about the
weather (for example: Steinbach, Hannover, Moscow, Manila,
Seoul…)
2. Research what the weather is like in that location this week –
what are the daily temperature highs and lows; wind speeds and
conditions (sunny, rain, snowing…)
***use information from three different web sources to confirm accuracy of content***
3. Create your script:
a. Greeting (“Good morning Winnipeg”)
b. Start reporting on the current weather (“Right now it is
cool, temperatures are sitting at 12 degrees, light wind and
partly cloudy skies”)
EAL11G

c. Talk about current weather across the region (Across the
province we are seeing similar temperatures with more cloud
cover in the east and clear skies to the west)
d. Discuss the next two days (incoming weather trends – what
weather is expected to come to our region: rainstorm, hot
temperatures, windy conditions…)
e. Tomorrow morning’s weather (“Tomorrow we are waking
up to warm temperatures, around 15 and the mercury will
continue to rise throughout the day”)
f. Long Term – what to expect in the next four days
4. Create a slideshow of images and or maps that can be displayed
behind you to match each section of information. Explore
powerpoint, prezi, slideshare or haiku deck to create and present
your images.
***these will be created on the computer and displayed on the
projector screen when filming***
