Job Description Job title School / department Grade Line manager Responsible for Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare 6 or 7 Professor of Mental Health Main purpose of the job The post holder will lead on, participate in and contribute to, the delivery and continuing development of modules and/or courses offered by the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare. In particular the post holder will work within the Mental Health team to support the delivery of the BSc (Hons) and Post Graduate Diploma pre – registration Mental Nursing courses. The post holder will provide leadership within the Mental Health course team, to provide excellent teaching and support to students undertaking modules and courses at the College, and to students and mentors in clinical environments. As a member of the academic team, the post holder will assist in the development of the professional, academic, research and scholarly profile of Mental health nursing within the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare. Key areas of responsibility 1. Deliver and contribute to the development of modules related to the Mental Health field of nursing courses within the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare 2. Develop high quality of teaching and learning materials to support the delivery of mental health modules/courses. 3. Deliver innovative teaching, learning and assessment strategies that enhance the student learning experience. This to students on mental health nursing related modules and /or courses and other courses within the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare 4. Act as course leader if required to ensure, in conjunction with the course team, high quality course delivery and an excellent student experience 5. Support students through various course(s), acting as personal tutor, monitoring their progression and supporting their key and academic skills development 6. Work in partnership with the course team, clinical practice staff and their managers, and service users to deliver high quality modules/course relevant to the needs of mental health service users and their carers/families/significant others 7. Support engagement with partner Trusts and other stakeholders, and support learners and manager/clinical placement facilitators/mentors in practice 8. Lead and contribute to applied research, professional practice and other scholarly activity in the field of mental health and wellbeing as part of the College’s academic development programme 9. Support and contribute to the enterprise agenda of the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare Page 1 of 4 10. Take responsibility for ensuring one’s own academic and professional development within the field of Mental Health care is maintained 11. Be involved in the recruitment and selection process of students and all others, commensurate with the grade of senior lecturer 12. Carrying out all administrative responsibilities and participate fully in quality assurance processes within the University 13. Register for Higher study at the first opportunity 14. Maintain professional registration and the highest levels of professional conduct. In addition to the above areas of responsibility the position maybe required to undertake any other reasonable duties relating to the broad scope of the position. Page 2 of 4 Person Specification Criteria Qualifications and/or membership of professional bodies Essential Desirable Has a PhD or enrolled on a PhD Study at Doctoral level Higher Degree in relevant subject e.g. Nursing or healthcare. Membership of professional organisations Teaching qualification recognised by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Registration with the NMC as a Mental Health nurse HEA Fellow or within 6 months of appointment A record of scholarly activity , including some experience of peer reviewed publications and/or contributions to books/chapters in books. Experience of working in an HE environment/setting e.g. Honorary / Associate / Visiting Lecturer Knowledge and experience Knowledge of current practice in teaching and learning in healthcare Knowledge of the use of evidence to support delivery of care If no community experience, some knowledge of work in the community setting. Use innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and materials Skills to work in a dynamic environment that can be challenging at times. Experience in supporting and assessing staff and students undertaking Mental Health nursing courses and programmes Experience in assessing competencies in practice and supporting mentors Experience of coaching and mentoring learners.
