GreenScreen®
Practitioner Program
Detailed Program Description
Last Updated July 2014
GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals (GreenScreen®) is a method for
chemical hazard assessment and benchmarking that supports the
identification of chemicals of concern and safer alternatives. It was
developed by the non-profit organization Clean Production Action
(CPA), to help identify chemicals for use in materials and products that
are safe and healthy throughout their life cycles.
The GreenScreen Practitioner Program is designed for individuals who
are interested in receiving in-depth training and developing expertise in
the GreenScreen method. This document will assist you in gaining
understanding of the breadth and scope of the program, the time
commitment involved to become a licensed practitioner, the benefits
to you and your organization and the steps for renewal.

COURSE CONTENT
There are two parts to the GreenScreen Practitioner Program – Advanced Topics via live
web-based classwork and the Practicum.
1. Advanced Topics Classwork:




One one-hour orientation session
Four three-hour Advanced Topics classes, held every four-six weeks
One one-hour closure session
Live, web-based training format using GoToMeeting, with screen sharing and
voice conferencing
 Classes are recorded and are made available if a participant has a critical conflict2
2. The Practicum:
 Each participant will perform two full GreenScreen assessments
 Practicum includes coaching, feedback, and question/answer opportunities from
CPA toxicologist and trainers
 Four one-hour live web-based work sessions are provided to answer questions
and discuss topics requested by participants
 The expected time commitment to complete these first two GreenScreen
assessments (depending on your prior experience and expertise) can be as much
as 5-10 hours per week or 70-120 hours per chemical

GREENSCREEN® PRACTITIONER PROGRAM
PRACTICUM DETAILS
Each participant will perform two full GreenScreen assessments as his or her practicum
requirement. This is the most time-consuming part of the course, and requires a serious
time commitment.
Assessment #1: Practicum assignments for the first GreenScreen assessment will
correspond to the relevant hazard endpoints discussed in the prior class. For
example, the homework assigned after Class #1, which discusses “Group I Human
Health” endpoints, will require participants to classify hazards for the “Group I
Human Health” endpoints for their first chemical.
Homework for the first assessment will be reviewed by CPA toxicologists
between classes and feedback will be provided to participants prior to the next
class. In addition, because the classes are live, participants may ask questions
related to the prior class and/or to their chemical during the classes.
Assessment #2: Participants will independently perform a second GreenScreen
assessment after all formal classes are complete; however, they can submit
questions to CPA staff at any time. In addition, there will be four live working
sessions scheduled during the practicum period during which CPA staff will be
available to discuss participant questions.
Assessments completed as part of the practicum requirement are evaluated using the
GreenScreen® Certification Process. Participants are required to submit revised
assessments based on that evaluation.

LICENSING
Requirements:
 Successfully complete all Advanced Topics classes and Practicum
 Pass final exam (written)
 Sign CPA GreenScreen® Licensing Agreement
Please note that participation in the Practitioner Program does not ensure participant
licensing. Participants must show an acceptable level of competency using the
GreenScreen method. CPA reserves the right to deny licensing to those who do not

Once Licensed, GreenScreen Practitioners May:
 Provide GreenScreen assessments for their registered organization. Practitioners
are not licensed to provide assessments or any other GreenScreen services for
other organizations
 Keep their licensed status even if they change organizations. Licensing is assigned
to an individual, not to an organization
 Submit GreenScreen assessments for certification through the GreenScreen
Certification Process
 Identify themselves publicly as GreenScreen Practitioners
 Audit future online Advanced Topics classes (if space allows, and at instructor
discretion)
The names and organizational affiliations of GreenScreen Practitioners will be posted
and maintained on the CPA website.
