C3-symmetric ligands, based on a triphenylamine core and three catechol binding units for complexation of metal ions, have been shown to form stable tetrahedra, possessing a huge inner cavity, which enables studies towards host-guest chemistry.[1] Scheme 1: Schematic formation of supramolecula tetrahedra from C3-symmetric ligands. My work aims for the interconnection of these supramolecular tetrahedra by introducing covalent bonds between two or more tetrahedra. This can be realized by using the well-known triphenylamine derived ligands, which are required for a proper formation of the tetrahedra, and which are further substituted by additional functional groups to allow the cross-linkage of tetrahedra. In 2011, it was demonstrated that the introduction of an ester moiety to a C3-symmetric ligand will readily provide functionalized molecular containers.[2] Now the focus is on additional modification allowing the crosslinkage of two or more tetrahedra.
