Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever.
Key Question: Who is your good friend?
Bottom Line: Jesus is my good friend.
Memory Verse: “A friend loves at all times.” Proverbs 17:17, NIrV
Bible Story: Jesus is a good friend.
Mary & Martha • Luke 10:38-42
Our Goal:
Toddler classrooms are one of the most unique places in the church. Between the diaper
changes, snacking, and rocking, there are small windows of playtime that are an amazing
opportunity to teach children about their loving Heavenly Father. This curriculum is designed to
bridge the gap as your young toddlers move from the baby room towards the twos.
We want toddlers to take a first look at who God is and understand...
o God made me.
o God loves me.
o Jesus wants to be my friend forever.

Bible Story
What You Need: A Bible.
LEADER: (Lay Bible down in front of you.) “Today I’m going to tell you a true story from the
Bible. This is the most awesome book in the whole wide world! Our story today is about two
(hold up two fingers) of Jesus’ friends. They were sisters! One was named Martha and the other
was Mary. Do any of you have a sister? (Pause.) Raise your hand high if you have a sister!
(Raise your own hand if you have a sister.) Sisters can have so much fun together but
sometimes they are SO different from each other!
“Martha liked to cook and clean and make sure things were ready for guests. Let’s pretend to
cook and wash the table like Martha loved to do. Ready? Get out your pretend bowls (make left
arm round like holding a bowl) and spoons (pretend to hold a spoon in your right hand)
annnnnnd (pretend to stir) mix, mix, mix. Great job! Mix a little more. Oh! We better wipe off the
table. Ready? Get out your pretend rags. Annnnnnd scrub, scrub, scrub! Excellent job! Mary,
the other sister, liked to sit and listen to stories that Jesus told. Both Mary and Martha loved
Jesus very much.
“One day Jesus came to visit Martha and Mary! They were so excited. Martha wanted to clean
up some more and bake a few things. So Mary went to listen to and talk with her good friend
Jesus while Martha worked-worked-worked-worked-worked to make everything perfect! Phew.
She worked SO hard that she got mad that Mary wasn’t helping. Let’s see your mad faces.
(Make a mad face.) Whoa. That’s EXACTLY what Martha felt like. Great job! Martha stomped
out of the kitchen to see Jesus.
(Speak in high-pitched voice and put hands on hips.) “‘Jesus, Mary isn’t doing ANYTHING.
Make her help me!’”
“Do you think that Jesus made Mary go into the kitchen? (Pause.) No! He said (deep voice),
‘Martha, you don’t have to be upset. The most important thing is to be a good friend!’
“Jesus loved both Mary and Martha, and He cared more about spending time with them than He
cared about a super fancy meal or a clean house. He wanted to talk with BOTH of His good
friends. Jesus was such a good friend to Mary and Martha and [Bottom Line] Jesus is my
good friend, too! Who is your good friend? (Pause.) [Bottom Line] Jesus is my good
friend! Ready to say it with me?! Who is your good friend?”

Make It Stick
Choose one or more of the following activities to help make the Bottom Line stick. Lead the
activities with small groups of children. Encourage children to play on their own if they do not
wish to take part in an activity.
Activity: Friendship Bracelets
“Friendship Bracelets” is an activity that helps tie in the focus of this week’s Bible story—
friendship—through children’s fine motor skills to decorate their own bracelet.
What You Need: “Bracelet” Activity Page, white cardstock, scissors, pen, clear tape, heart
stickers, and smiley face stickers. (all provided)
What You Do:
During the activity: Talk about friends and who our ultimate friend is while the children decorate
their friendship bracelets. Roll into a bracelet and secure ends with tape when finished. Write
children’s names on their bracelets.
(Option: If making another one to give to a friend set this one aside so the children can start on
another bracelet.)
What You Say:
Before the activity: “Friends are wonderful! We all have friends, but who is the best friend ever?
(Pause.) Jesus! Today we learned that Mary and Martha were good friends with Jesus, and we
can be friends with Jesus, too!”
During the activity: (Hand each child a bracelet.) “We are going to make a friendship bracelet to
remind us that Jesus is our good friend. Take some stickers and decorate yours. (Pause.) Oh!
What a great job you’ve done decorating your bracelet! Let me write your name on it and then I’ll
