I want to thank everyone for working together as
we settle into Pummill. Moving into a new facility
has brought some unexpected difficulties such as
support for the computer lab, new technology in
the classrooms and room temperature have
challenged us as a community. But coping and
problem solving are good social work skills. In that
same spirit I want to invite you to FALL HALL on
Thursday, November 5th from 12:30-1:30 in
Pummill 101, which is a social work community
forum where students can have input into
challenges and solutions. It could be that other
students want to work on the same things that you
do. We have also added students to our
community advisory group. I like the positive way
we are pulling together for a quality education to
make you proud to be a social worker from MSU.
We say it many times but our clients deserve good
social workers so producing good social workers is
our goal

VOLUNTEER
Service is the first of the six core values of the social work
profession. We serve others by doing our jobs. However, as
professional social workers we are ethically expected to go
beyond our workloads and “volunteer some portion of their
professional skills with no expectation of significant financial
return (pro bono service)” (NASW, 1996).
School of Social Work
Recognizes
Jamie Bailey
What does that volunteer service look like? It can be a wide
variety of activities on the micro, mezzo and macro levels from
serving as a lunch buddy to participating on nonprofit agency
boards to working in a faith-based ministry that serves
oppressed populations to advocating with elected officials. It
is clear how our service benefits others.
But, “What’s in it for us as social workers?” We already work
many hours in a challenging profession and many of us have
families that deserve and need our attention. The list of
benefits is endless but can include the opportunity to serve
someone without having to complete any paperwork or
accounting for your time; the chance to refresh ourselves by
meeting with others who share our desire for social justice;
and the opportunity to share the unique knowledge, values
and skills we have to help others see people as we see them –
worthy of respect and empathy, possessing strengths and
capable of change.
I was asked to write this item for the Monthly Newsletter
because volunteerism/service is my passion. I would ask
social workers why it is not their passion because it is the
means through which we achieve the change and justice our
clients deserve. Dr. Mary Ann Jennings

Intercultural Communication and
Interdisciplinary Research of University
Students Conference
Please join us Monday, October 5th, 7:30-10:30 pm in
Pummill 102 for a live Skype session with students from
our social work graduate program, students from Buryat
State University in Ulan Ude, Russia, and Florida
International University (FIU).
There will be interactive presentations of research projects
from each university, with a discussion to follow. We are
expecting 2-4 student research studies to be presented from
each university. MSW students Aziz Abdulaziz, Cynthia
Baker, and Ashley Reed will be presenting their research
projects during the virtual conference.
We think the International Student Conference is a great
opportunity for all our students to share their views on
various intercultural issues.
