Literature
Preparatory Program
Dear Students,
Pay attention to the parts called ‘Before
Reading’ and ‘While Reading’. However,
you are not going to prepare any
homework for these parts. Your project
starts from the part called ‘After Reading’.
You are supposed to prepare a portfolio
for this project and put all these homework
in it.
Important: You are going to work on 3
literary works (Short Stories) and 2
linguistic parts (papers). Don’t forget you
are expected to do all of these homework
for all of the stories and papers separately,
that is for example, in No. 1 you are going
to write a cause paragraph for story No. 1,
No.2 and No.3. In other words, homework
1 will be done 3 times.
For finding the stories, go to the following
page and then download the text PDF.
http://americanenglish.state.gov/resources/
gift-magi-and-other-stories
There are 15 stories and a glossary file.
From those 15 stories select “The Gift of
the Magi”, “The Last Leaf”, and “The
Romance of a Busy Broker.
Before Reading (This is not the
homework, only for getting idea!)
1- Get some idea about the author,
date and place of the story.
While Reading (This is not the homework,
only for getting idea!)
1- At the end of each page, ask
yourself “what will happen in the
next page?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After Reading (Literary Part) (This is the part you should do as your Project work)
1- Put yourself in one of the character’s shoes and write a cause paragraph of 250
words to decide what you would do in a specific situation (of your choice) and
why?
2- In which situation were you affected most? Write a paragraph of 250 words to
explain why.
3- With writing a paragraph of 250 words, decide upon which part of the story you
liked most and why?
4- Considering the characters in the story, choose the best and worst one according to
you and give your reasons in a 250-word paragraph.
5- Discuss in a 250-word paragraph whether there are any differences or similarities
with real life and the story.
