Stage 6 – Preliminary and HSC

Scope and Sequence Stage 6 (Years 11-12)
Preliminary & HSC:
Students select one of the three courses available in Senior English
Advanced: This course is designed for students who have a strong connection to English. They are
students who are generally seeking an ATAR and are strong readers. The Advanced course requires
students to study at least one Shakespearian text and critically analyse other texts. Students in this
course study one more text than the Standard course. These students also have greater access to Band
5 & Band 6 results in the HSC. Students who select the Advanced course also have the opportunity to
select Extension 1 English in the Preliminary, and HSC years, and Extension 2 English in the HSC
year.
Standard: This course is designed for students who are seeking an ATAR but are not necessarily
strong readers. Students study four texts including a play, poetry, novel, film or nonfiction. Rather
than engaging in critical studies of texts students focus on a close study of texts. The Standard
students are typically restricted to a Band 4 as the top potential result. However, students in Standard
can achieve Band 5 results (This has happened at Kelso High on a number of occasions).
In Advanced and Standard students study common texts in the Area of Study. The Area of Study
allows BOSTES to create a common marking scale for the two courses. Both Advanced and Standard
students are required to sit an HSC examination at the end of Year 12.
English Studies: This course is designed for students who DO NOT intend to apply for an ATAR.
The course still qualifies students for the award of a HSC, but they are not required to sit an HSC
examination. The students are assessed by their teacher. The award of marks or grades is determined
by the assessment results and class work.
