Chapter 3, Lesson 3
Notes pgs. 132-137
Measuring Weather
1. What is meteorology? The study of weather
2. What does it mean to forecast? Make predictions about future weather
3. What does a thermometer measure? Air temperature
4. What does a barometer measure? Air pressure
5. What does an anemometer measure? Wind speed
6. What does a hygrometer measure? Amount of humidity (water vapor) in the air
7. How can rising air pressure lead to a prediction about temperature? Rising air pressure
means that the temperature may be dropping, it will be less humid and low chance of rain
8. What is the difference between an anemometer and a wind vane? Anemometer
measures wind speed, wind vane measures wind direction
Fronts
9. What happens when air masses collide together? A front forms
10. When does a cold front form? When cold air moves under warm air
11. When does a warm front form? When warm air moves over cold air
12. When air masses collide, how does the warmer air mass move? It is pushed up over the
cold air because it is less dense
13. Does air temperature increase or decrease as a cold front moves into an area?
decrease
14. You hear on the radio that a warm front is headed towards us. What type of weather
can you expect? Rainy/snowy weather that will last for hours, rising temperature, humid
*A cold front produces short thunderstorms
Weather Maps
15. What is the symbol for a warm front? Red line with half circles
16. What is the symbol for a cold front? Blue line with triangles
17. What is the symbol for rain? Rain droplets
18. What is the symbol for snow? Dots of snow or snowflakes
19. What is the symbol for low pressure? Capital L
20. And where does it form? Forms where warm light air is surrounded by high pressure air
21. What is the symbol for high pressure? Capital H
22. And where does it form? Forms where cool dense air is surrounded by low pressure air
Forecasting Weather
23. What is a weather station? A place where many different instruments measure the
weather
24. If a high pressure system is moving into the Alpharetta area, what kind of weather can we
expect? Fair pleasant weather
25. How does Doppler radar work? Radio waves detect wind and movement of
precipitation
26. How do meteorologists predict weather? Use instruments to collect data, data is sent to
meteorological center, analyze information, make weather maps, use maps to forecast
Weather Patterns and Climates
27. What is the difference between weather and climate? Weather is what is happening
outside right now and climate is weather patterns over a long period of time
28. What two major weather factors determine climate? Temperature and precipitation
