Writer's Eye is an annual writing competition that challenges writers of all ages
to use selected artworks in the Museum as inspiration for original poetry and
prose. Submissions are evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges, and
winning entries are published in the annual Writer's Eye Anthology.
Ms. Lovaglio and Ms. McLaughlin’s American Studies classes will engage in a
docent led tour of the Writer’s Eye art works at the Fralin Museum of Art on
Monday, October 7th for 7th and 8th periods and Tuesday, October 8th for 5th and
6th periods.
All the art work featured in the Writer’s Eye competition can be viewed at
http://www.virginia.edu/artmuseum/edu/k-12-programs/writers-eye/. The
museum is also open Tuesday – Friday from 12-5.
Write an original and previously unpublished story or poem inspired by one of
the Writer’s Eye selections at The Fralin.
There will be time in class to work on the writing, but there will be the need to
work at home for creating your piece of prose or poetry and editing. In school
there will be some time in English class to work on your rough draft.
On Nov 13th (all periods- big class that day!) rough drafts are due. On
that day two copies of the prose or poetry must be brought to class. Students
will peer edit each piece and changes can be made. The final copy and
submissions to the Writer’s Eye competition are due on Friday,
November 22nd.
Include the following on all pages you submit:
 The title of your poem or story.
 The title and artist of the artwork that inspired your entry.
Use 12 point Times Roman font.
Poetry: typed and single-spaced
Prose: typed and double-spaced
Do not type your name on any page of your submission; your name should only
appear on the entry form.
Staple the entry form to the front of one of your copies.
Paper Clip all copies together with the entry form on the top.
No, but it is an excellent extra credit opportunity. Submitting to Writer’s Eye
will result in extra credit in both English and history. If you place in the
competition there will be extra-extra credit added.
Entries must be received at the Fralin Musuem by 5 pm on November 22nd. Ms.
Lovaglio and Ms. McLaughlin will hand deliver the submissions to the museum.
-Please be sure the entries are formatted as instructed. Failure to comply with
these rules may disqualify your entry.
-Writers give permission to The Fralin Museum of Art to publish entries upon
submission to their competition. Manuscripts will not be returned.
-The Fralin Art Museum of Art reserves the right to eliminate a category if
entries are not sufficient in number or quality.
* Special Note: If you choose to write a poem, it must be at least one page in length. If you choose a poem
with a shorter, defined structure (like a Haiku), you must write at least THREE poems in response to your
chosen work of art. This is a requirement on our part to ensure that each student completes a comparable
amount of work on this assignment.
