Lesson: Biography/Autobiography Unit
Objective: Students who choose Soul Surfer will read and discuss the thirteenth chapter of the autobiography.
They will use context clues to determine or clarify the meanings of unfamiliar words. Students reading She Said
Yes will write a book review. Students who read Woodsong will write a letter to Gary Paulsen, the author.
Activity: Soul Surfer students are to read the thirteenth chapter of the book. Discuss the events of the chapter
and how it affects the main character. She Said Yes is to write a book review. The purpose of the book review
is to summarize the main idea, tell their opinion of it, and recommend/rate it. Woodsong is to write a letter to
Gary Paulsen. The purpose of the letter is to tell Gary what they thought of his book, what they learned, and
ask any questions they may have of him.

unfamiliar words. Students reading She Said Yes will create projects that relate the theme of the book and
shows understanding. Students who read Woodsong will write a letter to Gary Paulsen, the author.
Activity: Soul Surfer students are to finish their vocabulary and the questions related to the chapters read this
week. She Said Yes are to decide which project they will do and start researching. Woodsong is to finish typing
their letter to Gary Paulsen. The purpose of the letter is to tell Gary what they thought of his book, what they
learned, and ask any questions they may have of him.

Objective:. Students will tell about the books they have been reading for a book report.
Activity:. Students will tell about the characters, setting, events, main conflict, and what they believe the theme
of the book is to the rest of the class.
