May 2011 Undergraduate Degree Report
Conducted and Prepared by Russell B. Lennon, Director of Career Services
May 9, 2012
Purpose
To determine whether or not recipients secured full or part time employment, where employed, job
title, advanced degree plans, what source did they use to find employment. Recipient comments
when provided are noted.
Methodology
A questionnaire composed of four questions and a comments area was prepared (exhibit one) and
mailed along with a cover letter (exhibit two) from the Director of Career Services accompanied by an
enclosed postage paid return envelope.
Three follow-up phone calls were made to recipients who did not respond by mail.
Recipients
May 2011 undergraduate degree recipients were identified in a report prepared and presented by the
Registrar’s office. A total of forty names were provided. Two reported they did not receive their
degree as of May 2011. One elected not to participate in the study, another was in the military and
unavailable, and six were no longer reachable by telephone. The final reporting number was reduced
to thirty recipients.

Comments
Would recommend CSJ, loved professors
CSJ was a big help in creating job readiness
It would have been helpful if CSJ has a resort management program
Internship great way to put studies to real life, good job opportunity
More help finalizing a job after school. Felt like he was on his own to find a job.
Recommends CSJ, loved classes and folks she met
Communication with commuters should be strengthened, more than e-mail. Great experience
Recommends CSJ, excellent program
Would recommend CSJ
In Oct found PT job via friend working there. Getting my bachelors was a waste of time and
money because there are no jobs

Benchmark
In an effort to establish a national benchmark I searched the Associated Press web site for an applicable report
and was able to locate an article released for publication on April 23, 2012 written by Hope Yen, Associated
Press, entitled “1 in 2 new graduates are jobless or underemployed”.
He reported the following statistics based on an analysis of government data conducted for the Associated
Press. “About 1.5 million, or 53.6%, of bachelor’s degree-holders under the age of 25 last year were jobless or
underemployed, the highest share in the last 11 years. In 2000, the share was at a low of 41 percent, before
the dot-com bust erased job gains for college undergraduates in the telecommunications and IT fields.”
College of Saint Joseph (CSJ) responding graduates reported only 28.6% are unemployed or underemployed.
This is very good news when the national average is 53.5% or 68% higher than that reported by responding
CSJ graduates
Mr. Yen’s article accompanies this report.
