Sunday Liturgy Guide for the Church of the Poor in the Spirit of the New Evangelization Pagdiriwang November 8, 2015: Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Theme: The Church of the Poor, through the Basic Ecclesial Communities, fulfills her priesthood through total solidarity with the resistance against injustice and compassion for the struggle of the poor for liberation. Catechesis: With the theme: “The Church of the Poor, through the Basic Ecclesial Communities, fulfills her priesthood through total solidarity with the resistance against injustice and compassion with the struggle of the poor for liberation”, let us reflect on “A Renewed Integral Evangelization” with PCP-II, when it says: “PART III. A RENEWED INTEGRAL EVANGELIZATION A. ANNOUNCING A MESSAGE OF SALVATION ‘5. Characteristics of the Renewed Evangelization (186)This renewed evangelization is characterized by the clarity of its goals, and by the newness of its fervor, methods, and expressions. a) The Goals of Evangelization (187) Renewed evangelization must aim first of all at the formation of Catholics in a properly integrated spirituality. This integrated spirituality is a response to God who calls us all to be holy as the Father is holy. (188) The desired type of an integrated spirituality may be described in these words: … an integrated spirituality that unites faith in the Lord with justice and charity to His brothers and sisters and joins together a hope for the world to come with an intense commitment to transform the world; a spirituality that seeks the salvation of the total human person while keeping in mind the primacy of his/her spiritual needs; a spirituality that seeks for change not only in interior attitudes but in ecclesial and societal structures; a spirituality that witnesses through action to the faith he/she professes; a spirituality finally, that dynamically inter-relates communion and mission in the Church’s life. Points for Reflection: How have you lived out these five dimensions of integrated spirituality? Could you describe each dimension based on your experience? How different is integrated spirituality from the traditional pious understanding of holiness? What is the relationship between renewed evangelization and integrated spirituality? Can one exist without the other? Entrance Antiphon (Cf. Ps 88 (87): 3) Let my prayer come into your presence. Incline your ear to my cry for help, O Lord. Introductory Rites P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen P. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And with your spirit. Introduction and Welcome: P: Dear brothers and sisters: on this 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time, let us continue to ask God’s grace to be aware of our Christian and Catholic heritage as the prophetic conscience of our people. In a very special way, let us ask God to help us develop an integrated spirituality so that we can truly embark on the mission of renewed evangelization. Penitential Act P: And so dear brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate worthily these sacred mysteries, let us now acknowledge our sins, and ask God for pardon and strength: P: Lord Jesus, you have called us to be prophets that resist injustice and are compassionate with the poor in their struggle for liberation. Lord, have mercy. C: Lord, have mercy. P: Christ Jesus, you have called us to live out our priesthood by offering ourselves as gifts to you and to one another in love and service. Christ, have mercy. C: Christ, have mercy. P: Lord Jesus, you have called us to be your disciples through total solidarity with human need and not through the partial charity of greed. Lord, have mercy. C: Lord, have mercy. P: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. C: Amen. Gloria Glory to God in the highest Glory to God in the Highest! And on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, Almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect: P: Let us pray: Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that, unhindered in mind and body alike, we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. C: Amen. Liturgy of the Word: L: A reading from the First Book of Kings (1 Kgs 17:10-16) In those days, Elijah the prophet went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her, "Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink." She left to get it, and he called out after her, "Please bring along a bit of bread." She answered, "As the LORD, your God, lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid. Go and do as you propose. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son. For the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'" She left and did as Elijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the LORD had foretold through Elijah. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Commentary on 1 Kgs 17:10-16 The marriage of Ahab, king of Israel, and Jezebel, a Phoenician princess, brought Baalism, the ideology of oppression and injustice into Israel and assaulted the Yahwism, the ideology of justice and liberation. Baalist attacks on Yahwism – the proliferation of injustice and oppression of the poor and the defeat of justice and liberation – killed the prophets. This is the context of the rise of Elijah as prophet of Yahweh. The miracle at Zarephath brings back the universalist theme of Yahwism. All peoples are called to faith in Yahweh, and to his work of justice and liberation. The fulfilment of Elijah’s promise to the gentile woman of Zarephath proves that Yahweh has favored the prophets again as his human instruments of resistance and compassion. Responsorial Psalm Ps 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 R. (1b) Praise the Lord, my soul! or: R. Alleluia. The LORD keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! or: R. Alleluia. The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who were bowed down; the LORD loves the just. The LORD protects strangers. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! or: R. Alleluia. The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! or: R. Alleluia. Commentary on Ps 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 This is a hymn to God, Creator of the universe and the Defender of the poor. He gives his saving love to those who are victims of human beings: the oppressed, the hungry, the prisoner. He takes care of those who suffer due to natural weakness: the blind, the lame. He helps those who have less by virtue of the twists and turns of their lives: the emigrants and strangers, the fatherless and the widow. The human answer to God’s marvelous deeds is praise: alleluia! L: A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews (Heb 9:24-28) Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf. Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own; if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice. Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment, so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Commentary on Heb 9:24-28 The preacher contrasts the Jewish priests who entered the sanctuary repeatedly according to the calendar of their celebrations with Jesus Christ, the high priest, who entered only once into the sanctuary not made by human hands: heaven. While the Jewish priests offered the blood of sacrificial offerings, Jesus Christ has offered his own blood on the cross only once, but with an eternal impact: the liberating and saving effect of the cross and the resurrection cuts across human history. Jesus has embraced time in its eternity, which he will complete by his second coming to gather those who are waiting for him at the end of time. Alleluia Verse: (Mt 5:3) R: Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. R: Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel P: The Lord be with you. C: And with your spirit. P: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 12:38-44) C: Glory to you, O Lord. In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation." He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Lord Jesus Christ. Commentary on Mark 12:38-44 Mark makes a contrast between charity of the literate accumulators of power and wealth and the generosity of the poor widow. The literate few use power and the poor to dispossess the people, appropriate for themselves the possessions of others, and thus impoverish the people. They donate to charity from out of their surplus, whereas the poor widow gives from her poverty and nothingness. There is indeed a difference between partial charity and total solidarity! Homily: The Church of the Poor, through the Basic Ecclesial Communities, fulfills her priesthood through total solidarity with the resistance against injustice and compassion for the struggle of the poor for liberation.
