Description of Standards-Based Rubric Template
Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) are being used increasingly as a way to evaluate teachers’
contributions to student learning growth or outcomes. The attached rubric is designed to
encourage educators creating SLOs to
1. Focus on key content standards (there may be several for a single SLO)
2. Tie performance levels for students directly to those standards
While there are many rubrics that may be useful for the purpose of evaluating student learning,
few focus on explicit learning standards. The purpose of this rubric is to provide educators with
a template for thinking about measuring standards-based performance. Use the form with local,
state, and national standards.
The rubric can be used with any types of assessments that allow the teacher to determine
student’s proficiency, including paper-and-pencil tests, multiple choice exams, individually
administered assessments of skills, essays, reports, projects, portfolios, performance, products,
etc.
Best practices for using the rubric include:
 Working collaboratively with teachers in the same/grade subject area to develop
standards
 Asking students to work together to help create the descriptions for the different levels
 Having students pair off and and egage in peer feedback sessions using the rubric and
student work
The rubric is intended to work with any type of SLO systems. It is supplemental tool and not
intended to replace any state or local requirements. It can be modified by users as needed.
