FAQs
How Do I Get EndNote?
EndNote is available for PC and Mac OS 10.4+.
Year 2010 Import Problem: Solutions
Q. When importing records from 2010 or later, the record may have a blank in the Year field.
How can I correct this on future imports?
A. This is a known issue with EndNote versions X2 through 8. This issue may affect older
versions, but versions prior to 8 were not tested and are no longer supported. For solutions, see
http://www.endnote.com/support/Faqs/Import/faq20.asp
What Is EndNote?
EndNote desktop software manages bibliographic citations. Using EndNote, you can transfer
groups of references retrieved from online bibliographic databases into your EndNote database
and create bibliographies in a variety of formats using a variety of word processors.
Many databases allow Direct Export of Citations into EndNote. In most cases, you will need to
mark citations, and then look for a "print/save/export" link. The following Library databases allow
Direct Export.
Database
CINAHL (EBSCO)
EBSCO Business Source Premier
EBSCO Masterfile Select
EBSCO General Science Collection
EBM Reviews
Google Scholar
HealthSTAR
JSTOR
Medline OVID
Entering References by Hand
When you are working in an archive or library with no online catalog, or when you are copying
references from books, you will need to know how to enter references into EndNote by hand.
Watch the online video: Manual Data Entry" or download a high-quality video from Thomson
Reuters.
Searching Databases Directly
You can search PubMed (National Libraries of Medicine) and other free databases. Results will
be automatically downloaded to your EndNote Library. To search, click on the "online search"
icon (looks like a globe) on the EndNote menu bar.
Using EndNote Filters
Some databases do not offer Direct Export to EndNote. But most of them do offer to format
citations for use in programs like EndNote. First select the citations, then look for an
"export/print/email" option. To get these citations into EndNote, you will have to either download
the formatted citations, or mail them to yourself. Then you will use one of EndNote's built-in
"filters" to import the citations into EndNote. Use the instructions on this table to add citations to
EndNote.
PUBMED
Display citations in MEDLINE format; then choose email or print.
Import into EndNote using PUBMED (NLM) filter.
What Are Output Styles?
Output styles determine how your references will look when exported to footnotes,
bibliographies or lists. Common output styles are MLA, Chicago Manual of Style, APA, etc.
EndNote has templates for these and many other styles required by scholarly journals. You can
also customize existing styles, or create your own. The EndNote User's Guide (pdf) included
with your EndNote installation, provides complete instructions on how to do this.
Using Cite While You Write
EndNote's Cite While You Write (CWYW) feature inserts EndNote commands into Microsoft
Word. Use CWYW tools to create footnotes, in-text references and bibliographies from your
EndNote Library.
What is EndNote Web?
You don't have to run EndNote on your desktop to use EndNote Web. You can export citations
to EndNote Web and download them later to EndNote on your desktop, or create bibliographies
directly from EndNote Web.
Transferring References from EndNote Web to Desktop EndNote
On your EndNote Desktop, go to Edit | Preferences and choose EndNote Web.
Enter your EndNote Web username and password.
Go to Tools | EndNote Web. A box will open asking you whether you want to transfer references
TO or FROM EndNote Web.
If you do not want to export (copy) all your references to Desktop EndNote, you should organize
them in Groups.
Can I search the catalogs of other libraries?
You can search the catalogs of many academic and special libraries via EndNote. Connection
files for many of these are included in your EndNote program. Connection files for libraries are
also available from the EndNote website.
How can I import results of searches into EndNote?
For databases and libraries that do not provide Direct Export, EndNote uses filters to import
records into your personal library. Filters are specific to the resource and interface. (e.g. Medline
= resource, and Ovid = interface). Consult the chart on the Filters Page to see which EndNote
Filter to use and how to download records.
Mac OS X text file import problem
Users of EndNote on OS X have reported that EndNote does not recognize text files saved from
database searches as files it can import using filters. Follow this procedure to import text files
into EndNote using filters:
Save references as text files (this includes references you have emailed to yourself) on the
Desktop
Open EndNote
Drag and drop textfiles to the EndNote icon on the Dock, while holding down the Option and
Apple keys.
EndNote will ask you which Library to import the text files into, and which filter to use.
Choose the Library and filter and references will import.
How can I export citations from Google Scholar to EndNote?
Connect to http://scholar.google.com
Click on "Scholar Preferences"
Scroll down to "Bibliography Manager"
Choose EndNote. Now all your Google Scholar results will be linked to or "Import into EndNote."
Save your preferences when finished and return to search.
What is Direct Export and which databases have it?
You can use Direct Export to import selected references directly to EndNote, without saving,
downloading and importing using filters. Consult the chart on the Direct Export Page to see
which databases offer Direct Export. Your copy of EndNote must be on the same computer. If
you are working on a Library computer, use EndNote Web.
NOTE FOR MAC OS X USERS: To use Direct Export, use either Mozilla, Firefox or Netscape to
search online databases. (Safari and Internet Explorer cannot associate the exported
references with EndNote.)
Can I convert my existing RefWorks, ProCite, Citation 6, 7, Reference Manager or other bib
manager database to EndNote?
Yes. Download the appropriate conversion utility from the EndNote website.
Which is right for me: EndNote or RefWorks?
RefWorks is available only online, while EndNote is software you load on your personal
computer.
There are advantages to having Refworks online: There is no software to load and it is
available anywhere you are that is connected to the Internet. These are also disadvantages: you
must be online to access your Refworks database. Some researchers prefer EndNote because
they feel more secure with a local copy of their database.
If you own a laptop, and are planning to do work in areas where there may not be a connection
to the Internet (such as archives), you might prefer to get EndNote. Both programs offer the
same ability to download results of searches from online databases and libraries, and the same
ability to insert footnotes in papers and create bibliographies.
Is there a EndNote User mailing list (listserv) I can join?
Yes. To join the list, see http://www.endnote.com/support/en-interest.asp
